Does anyone have a Santa Barbara Greenhouse?

I've been looking around and these caught my eye years ago. I don't like the looks of the aluminum framed kits. This looks nice and sturdy.

Does anyone have a SBGH? What are your likes/dislikes?

It is much nicer looking than the other hobby greenhouses I have seen!

I agree. Redwood holds up very well in this area. If I have to look at it day in and day out, I don't think I want a little aluminum kit.

I bought a Santa Barbara greenhouse - Deluxe model 9x16 - last year, after much research on the web comparing structures and prices. I chose the redwood frame and tempered glass mainly for the looks, I wanted something outstanding that would add to the beauty and value of my home and this greenhouse certainly does. I bought it from MCgreenhouses, as they were having a sale at that time. Some friends put it together for me in a weekend. I chose the Lean to model because I was looking for something that would give me easy access to my greenhouse. Plus proximity to electricity and plumbing from my home. I enjoy having my breakfast in the morning and reading a book in the afternoon/weekend in my greenhouse, among my plants, even in the winter: a heavy duty electric heater does the job! This is my first Ã¢ÂÂrealÃ¢ÂÂ greenhouse and I am not an expert on greenhouses, but I can certainly say that it has served me well. I receive lots of compliments from neighbors and friends all the time, one friend is actually thinking of getting the same greenhouse, as well. I have been doing some growing in it, although I am not an expert in that field either, but I am learning. I had friendsÃ¢ÂÂ children playing around my greenhouse, throwing balls at the glass panels; I went through a couple of heavy storms, but the structure and panels remained untouched! I can only say that I love my greenhouse, it is the best money spent!

Hi Rein. Good suggestions given to you already! I was 'overwhelmed' at first, too. I'm sure that most people can identify with that. Take it a few steps at a time and read/research. You will be surprised how much you can learn. If you know your reasons for wanting a GH, that can help to look closely at some GH kits while eliminating others. If you know what you actually want to grow, that can also provide some guidance. Being in Zone 7, you will need to heat in the cold months for a year-round GH. Do you need help deciding on the type of walls? What size of GH do you want? How will you heat? Have you decided to purchase the redwood frame for looks only? If so, you may want to heed the suggestions of others with the metal frames. Not only less expensive, but they are more durable and very easy to maintain. And there are more choices GH available. I have a Juliana and made my purchase through ACF. Being in Virginia, they had to charge sales tax. I priced this kit elsewhere, including direct from the manufacturer. Ironically, the best price ( INCLUDING Virginia sales tax ) was with ACF. I have been very pleased with ACF on delivery and customer service. I've since ordered several small items (hooks, shade cloth, additional framing bolts), and ACF is tops on service, in-stock items, delivery.

I don't like to toss cold water at anyone, but for less than $500.00, you are looking at a very small GH, with few of the accessories that make the difference between a walk-in cold frame, and a working GH. However, from what I've read here, a Harbor Freight GH may be the most bang for your bucks. Go to the HF website, and check them out.

Floorguy, it wasn't a bait and switch. I know retail. This girl was a bit new to this flooring store. She thought the Mowhawk stuff was overpriced and in her mind the Appalachian was the better buy. I was wandering around the store, saw the Mohawk Santa Barbara and inquired. She was shocked when she got the pricing that it was at the time cheaper. I'm assuming you're a professional floor guy by your name. Can you give some insight on which of those two is the higher quality floor? I thought the Mohawk was at the veneer on top was thicker and the total plank just felt heftier. I had one when I lived in Ventura, CA. Very sturdy, so it is rather involved to assemble. Depending on the wind in your area, you might want to mount it on a footing of concrete that you can anchor it to. Also depending on the wind, you might want to put a safety chain on the vents so the wind doesn't tear them off.

Thanks...they have a modular option. Their footing recommendations anchor it to the ground. The chain is a great idea. I just really like the looks of it...and have be lusting after one for a while.

Hey K, Have you ever looked at the Cedar-Built GH? I do not own one, but they always looked like one I wish I could get and they are highly customizable. I'm sure the cedar looks great just like the redwood :o) Dan

I did look at these, but didn't think they looked as well constructed. Contractor could customize.

If I ever am allowed to get a GH I will look closely at the SB ones as well - I think the wood looks great compared to the metal, same as you. I look forward to pics of yours once it is up :o) Dan

I am considering this as the redwood holds up to the humid conditions on the Gulf Coast. If this is how I go, I see the other has having a second life in the shade as a butterfly habitat!
