Quantity Vs. Quality of Sunlight
Comments (44)First of all, unless you're at really high altitude (I mean like, 10,000 feet or above), forget about UV. It's irrelevant. I don't think that too much light is an issue either. As I said, it's mostly about temperature. If it's hot, and the plant is in full sunlight, the plant will feel hotter! Again, remember, the AIR temperature in full sun is lower than the SURFACE temperature for anything dark, like a leaf, or asphalt. My plants get 100+F air temperature in full sun for four weeks here in Central Texas. How do I know when to shade them? Well, if they droop even when the soil is moist, they're too hot. They're not pumping water fast enough to keep up with the evaporation by the heat. I can't do much about the air temperature, but I can keep the sun off of them if I need to. I'd like them to have as much sunlight as possible (as Seysonn points out), but not if it means they're going to get overheated. I guess that means that the way the plants look is more important than what your light meter says. Actually, I should say that the only time I've ever shaded any plants was when I was planting a fall crop of beans in August. Those seedlings were delicate enough, with shallow enough roots, that they needed some protection. I think I also once put shade over some squash, but they were on their last legs anyway. Cukes might get stressed by the heat. Tomatoes, probably not, unless they are leggy, with very long stems. Peppers LOVE heat and sun. Now, I don't live in a dry desert climate, but I can presume that evaporation rates will be higher there, meaning that plants could get stressed with somewhat lower air temperature. But again, just look at the plants. They'll tell you if they're unhappy. Hope that helps....See MoreAustralia and my backyard update from winter
Comments (17)PJ, Thanks for the Australian tour and I would consider moving there if I were a little younger:) I agree winter protection makes a BIG difference in palm survival, especailly for the smaller less established palms. Sorry to hear you lost some. Frost cloth is not enough during a bad winter. Its good for temps dipping below freezing and frost, but not icy winds in the teens and 20s. Some of your palms looked like they'd be ez to cover with winter protetction. Keep us updated....See MoreQuantity Vs. Quality of Sunlight
Comments (2)I was reading a book by Larry Hodgson called "Making the Most of Shade." Although I didn't agree with everything in his book, I was intrigued by what he called the "Petunia test." The test involves planting petunias here and there in the shade garden to see whether they'll bloom. He said that if a petunia will bloom even weakly in an area, then that indicates a part-sun situation. He suggested using the test to determine whether some plants might bloom in an area that's thought to be shady. I live in Colorado, where sunlight is more intense than it is in other areas of the country. I thought I would give the petunia test a try next spring to determine just how much sun I get in various areas of my shade garden. You might consider doing the same in your area before investing in more expensive plants that require at least part sun....See MoreElectrolux Washerrs - Water Heater built-in or no water heater?
Comments (6)suburbanmd: while i've had my Electrolux units just installed a week ago, i have not yet used them. they merely turned them on briefly to indicate that they are "turning" and "working", so to speak. i could get my washer to go through the set up cycle and complete it, so i felt good about it. for some reason, i could not get the dryer to display "set up cycle" despite following all the directions. i called their support number, of course, but received totally incompetent help from difficult, poorly trained staff. they were difficult to talk to, poorly informed, and merely reading off some script with practically zero knowledge of the issues, unwilling to go to the next step to ask a more senior "engineering type", or a more senior "tech" person. they just wanted to tell me that if it's turning, then ignore the fact that the set up cycle did not appear and just feel ok about it. plus, they were downright rude in the manner of talking to me as well. all that said, i was impressed in how the Electrolux machines look and feel - of course, this is based on purely superficial criteria and i have yet to make a judgment based on usage experience. i have also just received my Persil delivery so i'm ready to go. my new apartment is 2 months away from being ready to move in so i'm thinking of doing a wash this weekend at the apartment which is currently a construction site. at least if there are issues, i can get them resolved prior to my move in date. i'm not as sure as you are, "suburbanmd", that 78F is THE temperature that "warm wash" is at. i think it's more along the lines of: should the water temperature falls below 78F, then the water heater kicks in. this does NOT discuss what happens if the water temperature is above 78F to begin with! right?...See Moregregmills_gw
