Growing dragon fruits in bay area

I just recently started growing dragon fruit and so far have 3 varieties. One of them being the yellow dragon. I heard that it's really hard for them to bear fruit here. Is this true? I am really hoping to have it bear fruit. I'm not wishing for a huge crop. I would be satisfied with just 3 fruit. Has anyone had luck with this variety fruiting for them in the east bay area around Oakland, Hayward? Anyone also know how to increase the chance of the yellow dragon variety in fruiting?

My Neighbor Sandy, has a planter of them. They flower and the fruit are pink Dragons.

I've haven't asked if they hand pollinate or if those big moths we get in summer might do the job. I can tell you for sure- you aim too low. They can really give quite a few fruit. I posted some photos on Dave's Garden from.

But,I see more and more of them around town..looking green and healthy. Try reading up on hand pollinating because if you get flowers and no fruit,don't give up. You just might have to help.

One thing I noticed Sandy is..the best set ups seem to be of multiple plants rather then one huge plant. Maybe the key to more production.

Stanofh thank you. I guess I'll have to wait for it to grow some more to take cuttings and root them to make multiple plants. I just heard a lot of people complaining they get really small fruit especially for those of us in California.

I dont live 12 floors up,so living on the ground is much different growing conditions, ya think??? He did give me hints,for growing them on a patio 12 floors up. But I thought this was an OPEN forum, and ASKING advise was allowed....my mistake. Guess you run it.? Not sitting around on my hands,and being 'patient' got me some nice rooted cuttings,at a very low price. I grow many slow growing, and slow blooming plants, all over my yard. I just want hints to speed these guys up and be good to them. Sorry to interrupt YOUR forum. Feel free to NOT give anymore of YOUR hints. GEEZ!

I have one in a pot I bought at a native plant sale a couple of years ago. The deer nibbled it and set it back somewhat last year, but I see some new growth on it this year. The new leaves are very dark, almost black but I assume they will green as they grow. I'm glad to see what a more fully grown one looks like, thanks! I look forward-- eventually -- to fruit as some other pages indicate it is very tasty....

I am a few blocks from the beach in So. Cal and my plant is a monster! I had it growing over the fence, but it is so happy it grows over the top of the house. I let it dry out COMPLETELY - meaning the top several inches of soil are dry, then water it well. Lots of organic matter in soil. Full sun.

And the likely reason the plants are sold in small sizes at the local nurseries is because they all have to go in a greenhouse during the winter, and can't be left outside. sort of a catch-22. Tropical trees growing in small containers are a lot more vulnerable to cold because there is no insulation to keep the roots from getting as cold as the outside air. It's not as practical for the nursery to store so many big sized plants in their limited inside space. You are indeed right, that is probably the reason gardeners in sub-cold climates have generally not had success with tropical fruits; young plants are more vulnerable and not able to tolerate the winters.

Reagans nursery in Fremont and even Home Depot carry named dragon fruits. They are no longer hard to find once summer comes around- just hurry as when they sell out,its wait until next year to get real plants in soil ( compared to ebay cuttings).
