Fertilizer for arborvitae and skip laurels
Comments (4)in 50 ears of gardening.. i have NEVER fertilized a shrub, conifer or tree ... and i work in sand ... they are plants.. not children ... they do not need to be fed.. nor changed.. nor educated ... that said.. there is little or no difference between those you mention.. except marketing budgets ... so if it really makes you happy ... and you dont mind spending money on such ..... go ahead.. just go very light .... since they really dont 'need it' .... in theory.. using fert.. when there is no real need.. might be considered pollution ... but i say pshaw on those peeps ... lol .. the grandkids need a piece of chocolate.. even if their hippy parents dont approve ... if i had a point.. i wonder if i ever got there... lol ... ken ps: its scary to think.. most the hippies are now 70 plus years old ... yikes ......See MoreSkip Cherry Laurel propagation question:
Comments (2)No. Cut it into sections, each with at least one leaf node, and insert into a well drained mix in a pot outdoors in shade and leave it in peace for a few months. Don’t let it dry out....See MoreSick Skip Laurel
Comments (7)That doesn't exactly look like whitefly but it is some kind of insect infestation. And a pretty significant one from the amount of stippling/discoloration showing. Laurels of all cultivars are ubiquitous here....to the point where they are listed as borderline invasive. But I have never seen any with that severe of an issue.....typically just shothole or weevil damage. So don't take my word it is not whitefly :-) It just looks different from what I am used to. The neem or even insecticidal soap should help but you must get it on the underside of the leaves and as complete coverage as possible. Not an easy task! The Bayer systemic should work as well but is not a fast control. And the leaves are always going to look as they do now....until they naturally fall off due to age....See Morenewly planted skip laurel dying
Comments (8)Yes, they are way too large for that siting!! Skip laurels get as much as 18' tall and 5-7' wide. This is the wrong plant for that space! And you also juiced up the planting hole unnecessarily with all the amendments and potions applied. You never want to amend individual planting holes and doing so in clay can create drainage issues that will impact water flow. Any amendments that might be necessary should be applied as a mulch or topdressing only. And newly planted shrubs need NO fertilizer for their first year - they come from the nursery with all they need to get established. btw, SuperThrive (aka SuperJive) is just very expensive snake oil. It does nothing to help plants become established and is really just a very dilute vitamin B solution. Don't waste your money :-)...See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
