Stackable washer/dryer (not gas)

The washer/dryer stack in our rental unit died. We need to replace ASAP. The dryer is not vented and there's no feasible way to do so - looked into it long ago when we actually lived there.

It's a high-end apartment so the units should be appropriately "nice"

would so very much appreciate suggestions.

Actually, the Amish use propane or gas fired motors to drive wringer washers. Can't see those washers fitting into a closet though ;-)Do you have a shed? I am curious about the safety of gas dryers in a closet. Do you already have a gas line to that closet? Is the closet large enough to handle the venting needs of gas? I have had friends who swear by their gas dryers (or in some cases, swear at them), but those installations have all been in basements or large laundry rooms. I always understood that gas dryers needed more space, but I could be wrong. I wonder if w/d units sold to the RV industry would have what you want. They are compact and most RVs use propane in some form. Good luck.

I also have a washer dryer in the kitchen. While I love my compact electrolux the matching dryer takes 240... I looked at the laundry centers long and hard...the thin twin kept being the favorite but for looks, if it will be visible in your kitchen, I'd opt for the new gray Frigidaire ( OK, I'm shallow). You need to consider your load size, when I really looked at the size of the loads that I was running a small washer was just fine. ( I also prefer to throw on a load of day and never have it stack up.) I was able to use two different laundry center units while we were on vacation. One of them was much easier to lean over and pull the laundry out of the washer than the other. I recommend you check reviews, find the model that you are thinking of purchasing in a store and lean over and imagine yourself pulling the laundry out of the washer (noticing in particular where the door of the dryer is in relation to your head, will you constantly hit your head on it?) because that is what you going to do. Most laundry centers do not have reversible doors so you need to pay attention to what your space requirements are for the door opening. Alternatively, you may still be able to buy a used gas dryer of the smaller size. You can buy 120 V dryers. What some people have done is to purchase a 120V washer dryer combo-one machine and a second machine that is a 120 V dryer. The issue with the smaller machines is that in order for the dryer to be effective the wash load has to be split in two so they wash a full load in the washer dryer combo and then dry half of the load in the dryer and dry the other half in the washer dryer combo. You should also be aware that there are high speed spinners on the market so if your washing machine doesn't spin enough water out and drying takes forever, you may want to buy one of these, I think they spin for all of two minutes, remove substantial amounts of water, and cost less than $100.

Wow! That laundry room on page 19 I would love that! It is too bad they didn't mention the GE brand as it has a vented dryer and because if you look at its ratings on Home Depot and Lowes you'll find that it is very well rated and it's about the same price as the Electrolux both of which are much less then the Bosch, Asko, Miele group. (Can you tell I like my GE vented dryer (the vent is about 1 foot long)?) I cannot guess at the insides of the Miele dryer but to me the main issue with the new fire code is that you use ducting that is also fire resistant, no more plastic ducting. You still have to keep the entire run clear and if the run is too long you really should be looking at a condenser type dryer instead of a vented dryer. The advantage of having a vented dryer disappears where the vent run is long or where the vent ducting is located in a place you cannot clean it. Unfortunately, I do not think that most people bother to clean their dryer vent even once a year.

@alex - Thanks so much Alex. It was done for sale and proved very effective. No hood in that apartment. One reason I stayed with a non-pro range. Had to open the window over the sink. I didn't do much heavy cooking in there but it worked for most things. And in NYC it's so much easier to live on take out. That condenser dryer did a great job. There were only 2 things about it. One, was that there was an interior grill/lint trap that had to be removed and cleaned periodically. The cleaning was tedious. Second was that the door to the closet had to be left open while the dryer was running. It created a lot of heat. It ran a little longer than the others but not so much longer that I remember. But that sure beat the years of lint we found in the wall when we removed the old dryer that been put on a wood shelf. We were lucky there hadn't been a fire. I've had Bosch, Miele and Asko dryers. IMO, while the Bosch heats things up more than the others, it does a great job. I would get another Bosch pair for an apartment without hesitation. Thing is, with the washer, you don't get the precision heater. So you don't get that extra muscle on the whites. But the drum capacity of the washer & dryer are slightly larger than the others. But I'd look at the Electrolux pair today since those are new to the market. I haven't seen it or used it but I think Larsi said the Elux compact has a heater.

Oops, I missed the part about the dryer not being vented. Speed Queen won't work, too bad.

What size are you replacing? Was this a compact stack or regular American size? If possible I would try to get one of the new heat pump dryers from Whirlpool or LG and the matching washer. Condenser dryers just plain suck compared to vented and this technology looks really promising.

If you don't want to try heat pump, or need a compact (24") set, I agree with dbabrams and xedos. Miele.

I should also mention Blomberg, but I wouldn't buy one because the manual is full of typos.

I have seen Asko and Miele side by side and the Miele is head and shoulders better built than the Asko. And everything else I've seen is below the quality of the Asko (Bosch, etc.). So really the best quality is Miele but they are super pricey compared to everything else.

I disagree with hv , European condensing dryers are just fine.

I have a bosch one at an apartment and had the exact same model but vented in a primary residence for a while. I didn't notice a performance difference at all. Cleaning the matrix on a condensing version is a bit more involved than just wiping the lint screen, but is manageable.

anoop - that's a pretty shallow reason to not buy a product isn't it? So they got a poor translator. That may reflect on marketing , but not manufacturing.

I used to have a condenser dryer in an apartment as well. Yeah in the end the clothes come out dry, but they take a really long time and they heat up the immediate surroundings a lot. Granted, a heat pump dryer will take longer than a vented one, but they're much more efficient than either a condenser or vented dryer. They don't put heat into the room and there is no loss through air leaks like with a vented dryer either.

My experience with the Bosch units was that it didn't take more time.

I can't speak to other models.

i also don't find the surrounding ambient air temp to be higher either. The forced air dryers give off heat too.

I really think it has more to do with your space and climate thN anything else.
