I Give Up - What Will Clean the White Film off our Porcelain Tile
Comments (23)Okay, one at a time. First, Correct-- no sealer on porcelain. Not only is it not necessary in that porcelain won't benefit from sealing, but it'll actually ruin the look of the tile, leaving a white haze on top of it. I was considering using a 16 x 16 white porcelan tile for my master bath floor rather than marble...thought it would be less maintenence. It is. Especially if you're going with a stark white porcelain in place of thassos marble. Is it easy to clean speckles of hairspray and other bathroom used products off of a porcelan floor? Just about everything will clean up pretty easily off porcelain. How do you prevent this grout haze from happening in the first place? By being meticulous when grouting that you clean the floor well. It's next to impossible to have no haze at all, but if the grout installation is done properly, all it should take to clean up afterward is a mop and plain clear water. Tile woman suggests that I will need virtually no grout line with this tile. If this is rectified porcelain, (which it sounds like it is) then I agree with her. You only need a minimal grout joint (1/16", +/-)....See MoreCan I put light colored laminate next to medium-dark hardwood?
Comments (7)I have hardwood. It can really take a beating and is rather low maintenance. Like lindac says, you have to take care, wipe up spills immediately, etc, and yes, it will show dings if you drop a hammer on it. Will you have an area rug in the room? At 6 and 2 your kids would never be untended, and they should be learning the procedures for taking care of problems. In my house, we use bathtowels for spills as they can go directly into the washer. We once had a full gallon of milk burst on the floor and once had a pitcher of red kool-aid spill without any sign of damage. It took a LOT of bath towels to clean up those messes!!! I would lay the same flooring you have in the rest of the house, along with a rug. You will never get a good match with laminate....See Morehelp me pick laminate flooring
Comments (40)jb- thanks for the vote of confidence. I am swimming without waterwings, tightroping without a net, flying without a parachute.......basically, "winging it" with lots of reading here, of course! And I'll post pics along the way! That makes it more fun, anyway. Brittu- yep, all the light ones got eliminated. I did not expect that. teedup- I'm hoping that in the end, I'll be looking at a total bill of about 20K, so the idea of even 50K sounds scary to me! I'm really happy with that number given that we went to bare studs and built everything back in again, but that also is with me doing serious bargain hunting, lots of DIY, and getting what I think would be $40-50K custom cabinets for about 5-6K.....an unusual family benefit! :) hedygs- the volga blue has more slate/green in it than you'd at first think...that is why the walls ended up a bit green. I guess I should have waited to paint till I decided on a floor, but were doing everything a bit backwards since the cabinets are delayed. I had to do something.....so I painted, and matched the paint to the cabs and the granite, and hoped for the best. Impatience may not pay off this time. janwad- nice and clean looking! very appealing. How do you like your ladylux? I do think that V. Slate is my favorite right now, but it is also the most expensive. That is fine, if it is perfect, but I'm going to wait to make sure that there are not problems with my granite before I commit to a floor....I can just see my slabs getting broken, and having to chose something new. Not pessimistic, just realistic....See MoreCloudy haze on hardwood floor. Only have used Bona all along.
Comments (50)I never said anyone MUST have done anything. I'm saying "check" to see what you used....just in case. Here's my own quote: 'Check to see if the bottle says "Cleaner" or "Polish"'. Now...the question becomes why is Bona Cleaner doing this? Bona Cleaner is a chemical with precise properties. If it is over used it can have deleterious effects. Hazing is the most common presentation. Over use is not the ONLY way to get the haze but it is the MOST COMMON. I've seen people have great experience when they used the cleaner sparingly (1-4 times per year). I've seen people have decent results with the proscribed use (1 per month). But even then, it can have hazing results. Over use would be considered: 1. Too much cleaner used at the time of the application (too much chemical)....the application being 1 per month (which is the proscribed rate). 2. Too much cleaner can mean too many days of application per month. Anything over 2 days per month (24 applications a year) is considered 'over use'. 3. Too much cleaner can mean (and often does) a mixture of both #1 and #2. A little bit too much cleaner used too often. That 'snick' of over use can be part and parcel of ANY wood cleaner that produces a haze. Armstrong and Bruce cleaner also have this issue. So it isn't just Bona....it's just the one with the BIG name that people choose to complain about. What is interesting is, the haze does not develop if the floors are toweled dry....which is to say...the CHEMICAL is wiped off BEFORE it can dry onto the floor and create product build up. Can Bona Cleaner produce a haze on the first application with the right amount of chemical? Hell to the yah! For this to happen, there are many things that have to go very wrong...it it can happen. The most common reason it causes haze on the fist application: it was applied to the wrong TYPE of finish....See Morecherleconrad
