Fiber cement backsplash??

I badly want a beadboard backsplash in my kitchen (including behind my range), but since I'm a bit, uh... accident-prone.. I know that I'd surely find a way to light it on fire. Yes, there is beadboard tile but 1) $$$$$, 2) I want to paint it, and 3) there would be a seam behind my range. Speaking of my range, it is a slide-in, so there's no barrier to prevent the inevitable fire when you mix me, wood and fire. So today I was thinking.. If fiber cement siding is fireproof.. Could it potentially be Amber-proof? At least more-so than real bead board? Does James Hardie, Azek, Certaineed or Nichahi make a fiber cement bead board product for porch ceilings?

I've also been thinking about a concrete backsplash and think Viroc boards (comes in 4'x8' boards) would look very cool. They are rated fire retardant, so perfect behind your cooktop. It comes in various thicknesses, sanded and unsanded. I like the unsanded for a real concrete look. It's easy to cut with regular wood working tools too so it shouldn't be problematic to cut out pieces to fit behind the stovetop and the rest of the backsplash.

I haven't found price info as of yet. But I've found one 4'x8' sheet at $75.- on sale on Ebay, located in MD, local pickup only. Check out the image link below. I think these boards look fabulous. Good luck!

I think that would look awesome in a modern kitchen!! I didn't see any faux bead board though, which would go much better in my sort of vintage-inspired kitchen! You would think if it's fire retardant it's kind of a no-brained that it's okay behind a range, right?!

I have seen plenty of mosaic artists do mosaics on plywood (exterior grade or marine), frame them prettily with wood moldings like a painting, and hang them using something like keyhole fittings, steel cleats, or flush-mount brackets. You could also screw them in place using heavy-duty wall anchors (I like the EZ-Ancor metal screw-in anchors sold at Home Depot) where the frame pieces would go, and glue on the frame pieces afterward. This approach has been suggested in many places for portability such as if you're renting; it was discussed on Apartment Therapy and I've seen it in several magazines and on an episode of Home To Go. There are plenty of mosaic artists doing works on plywood backings and having no problems with cracking - go see the folks over on the Stained Glass and Mosaic forum here on THS. It can be done and don't let the naysayers get you down.

Good Morning Kind People! Thank you so much for all your nice words. I swear I only posted so there'd be a picture / info (vendor, prices, installation) about these tiles, but you all have just made my day. Thank you!!! My 4.5 year-old son has a rare and profound neurological disorder (Encephalopathy with Status Epilepticus during Sleep (ESES), the Penelope Syndrome). He was mostly toilet-trained, able to speak, and then fifteen months ago he lost both of those as well as the ability to understand language, concept of danger, learned memory, etc. Since we're back to diapers and we change his diapers in the laundry room, I wanted to make that space as chipper, colorful, inviting as possible. We also do A LOT of laundry (like many Special kiddos, he is a v. messy eater due to Sensory / fine motor issues -- doesn't bother me). Here he is "helping" with the tile install: He's chewing on a chewy tube -- that back of the jaw pressure feels good to him, similar to people who gnaw on pencils / chew gum. maggie and sabji, thank you for the compliment about my painting! It's actually fun and soothing to paint those squares. It's taking a while but since I'm enjoying it that's okay by me! sabjimata -- are you talking about the grid on the wall or the pattern on the floor? Both were done solely by me, and I want full credit! Full! Re the floor, I told Lundy, the owner of Villa Lagoon Tile, that I wanted no solid colors and lots of vibrant patterns. She told the warehouse, who picked and packed them up. It was a big, fun surprise as I opened all the boxes and laid them out in the garage as my "dry run." There were no black & white, no yellows, no greens, so I contacted Lundy and she sent me some more so I could get a better mix (for what I was after). Nate, our sweet tile helper, removed the washer and dryer and old vinyl floor, and then he and I dry laid the tile in the laundry room. I tweaked some things and then we laid them -- that "we" was more Nate than I, admittedly. But, I bet Lundy could and would design a pattern if that's what someone was after. She really is great. Thank you again everyone! They really are a fun, inexpensive, durable way to get some color / pattern (bright or subtle) in any space, and I really believe they'd be terrific in a kitchen. **Except they are slippery in socks.**

So tired of hearing " but that will make it look dated" or "it wouldn't be good for resale" Everything is going to be dated at some point, the kitchen designers, cabinet companies and appliance companies make sure of that. Example: stainless steel appliances were just coming on the market 15 years ago when we gutted our kitchen for a remodel. It was hard for me to find stainless in my area at that time, I live in a small mid western town. So, have you noticed in the past few years appliance companies have been trying to bring out new colors, grayed looking stainless, now ice white etc. they are trying to make people think their stainless appliances are soon going to be "dated". But I have read in several articles that stainless is still the number one choice. I chose a cinnamon stained cherry wood for our new build. I thought about white because that is the trend right now, but I reasoned cherry cabinets will always be in style while the white trend Has just a few more years. I won't be a slave to trends. Just my opinion.

@cpartist that's what I think. But I've had tile shop people tell me that's the correct placement bc when you're in the kitchen it allows the entire pattern to be seen even with the upper cabinets partially blocking your view. So I didn't know if just looks weird in the photo. Have to admit it would be nice to avoid double the cutting cost. But in the end I'm afraid that placement would really bug me. I wish I was better at visualization - I'm struggling to envision what 1" of that tile will even look like. A bunch of scallops I think.

Oh, I thought you'd given up on bead board because of flammability, and were looking at cement board siding... sorry, my bad.

So I googled "bead board cement siding" and found that porch bead board you mention, I also found their resource center for technical documents:

Take time to read their data sheets, and I'd make sure the above applies to the porch bead board panel, and you should be good.

Btw. I think it's a great idea to use cement beadboard vs beadbord tile.. you can change the paint for one. I'm sure it'll look great in your vintage kitchen. Good luck!

Just make sure you seal all six sides of every piece. It does a great job against rain, but is not meant to be submerged or sit in water. I think you should also get a sample first before ordering (my lumber yard, which, sniff-sniff, was a casualty of the big boxes...but never mind. I'm over it.), used to have small, 6" samples of different fiber-cement siding that you could take. Some of them are kind of 'fuzzy', if you will, from the manufacturing process, and you want to make sure that it has the kind of texture and surface you want.

Here is a white solid surface panel with a bead board pattern that is a shower wall. Get it in the concrete look if that's what you like. You'd really rather clean pasta sauce off this than concrete.

The solid surface is Avonite, I believe. The guy in the background has taken a router with a beading bit and a straightedge and created the grooves. The panels come 30" or 36" wide; I glued them together.

For a backsplash, I'd rip the splash first and then run the beads. Unlike tile, you can fudge the last few a bit and get perfect spacing.

There is also ceramic bead board that can be used as a backsplash.
