My younger sister had it three years ago. It is pretty scary to deal with. She is fully recovered, two of her young daughters (2 and 4) also tested positive but they didn't get it nearly as bad.

Hope your sister has fully recovered from this horrible illness. Will your nieces be further tested as time goes by? My daughter required surgery as MRSA was down to the bone and she has suffered serious side effects from the powerful antibiotics.

My sister was pregnant at the time and had to go on powerful antibiotics. That daughter (3) has all rotted teeth now. The doctors won't say it is because of them but we think so as they don't drink juice and have very limited sugar in their household. The other girls' teeth who are older and perfectly fine.

When she has a flare up happen (sign of a boil) she stops eating for a full day or two and just drinks baking soda with water and swears by it. Most virus's once in the body will cause a positive reading when tested. I would ask a dentist how to prevent the adult teeth that will be erupting in a year or so how to prevent problems with the new teeth. Many things cause a boil including being diabetic she should ask her doctor what to do. Unless the doctor took a swab of the boil and had it checked giving antibiotics is just guessing. She needs to take control and next time she has a boil insist on a swab.

Cookie8 it is extremely painful! Extremely. Even under morphine my daughter suffered horribly and brought us all to tears. The heavy antibiotics also affected her teeth drastically and, even though she still tires easily, she is beginning to feel like her old self after over nine months. I am so sorry about the three-year-old and feel the advice by maifleur01 is very wise.

I think most who have had this condition would go to get swabbed due to considerations for others. I am sure the doctors get frustrated when she now refuses prescriptions but her method works wonders for her. She gets swabbed to know how to go about in public (precautions so as not to spread). They do nasal swab each visit - that is how they detect the virus.

My son's entire family had MRSA. My dil knew what to expect when break outs happened and had antibiotics on hand for treatment. As soon as a child would show symptoms of boils they were treated. Even the dad had it. He worked in a recycling business at the time. I always wondered if that had anything to do with it but I never really found out.

Read this article from Prevention Magazine. In Eastern Europe they can tailor a cure to each individual. It is not an antibiotic. The article says that some American researchers are trying to create a cheaper alternative to this method.

I presented to Urgent Care one morning after my right hand (thumb in particular) had doubled in size and had an open wound. The pain was off the charts. After taking off bandage tape, the doctor actually jumped backward, told me to recover it and go immediately to the ER.

I was admitted as soon as doctor saw sepsis going up my arm. He started tracking it with his blue ball point pen. I was instantly put on a heavy duty cocktail of antibiotics, which helped a little. Was in the hospital for 2 days before someone decided to take a nasal culture -- Duh. Came back positive for MRSA. Was then moved into a large sterile room, complete with guard at door and given more antibiotics, which finally worked. Although the virus went very deep, I was extremely lucky.

I carry this virus in my nasal passages. So far I have not has another episode.
