I think they are right about some use helping the seat cushions to sit a bit better. How does it feel when you sit on it?

If they scrunch down, won't they hang over even further?

Comfy, but I'm sitting a little higher. I feel the back is an inch shorter now because of the taller cushions, and my feet just touch the floor. I am tall & have long legs, so worry about someone shorter than me not being able to rest their feet comfortably on the floor.

Is the upholsterer right about giving the cushions time? He said he'd take another look at them when he picks up the armchairs in mid-month.

I can't advise on the cushions, but just wanted to say that is a gorgeous sofa! Lovely shape and I really like the fabric you chose.

I've never had anything worth reupholstering...and I don't know what it looked like before. But I wonder is it possible that your old cushions were squished down (worn out) and that's why the new ones seem high to you? I guess if I were you I'd give it some time to adjust, both you and the couch :)

Yes, he's right. My sister works in a high end furniture store, where years ago, I ordered a custom sofa. When it was delivered, the cushions seemed high. She came over and demonstrated what they actually tell clients in the store to do - take your shoes off, have clean socks on, put the cushions on the floor and walk on them! It seemed very odd, but she did it here and told me that they would soften up, and they did.

Think of how many posts we see about people saying that their cushions have flattened over time. :-)

And thanks, My3dogs, I'm feeling more reassured. Right now they seem like open clam shells the way they sit on the sofa -- there's that big gap between the sofa & the bottom of the cushions that spoils the lines visually.

Love the sofa, both the shape and the new fabric! I think the cushions will settle in. They probably "feel" really high after being redone. You should probably take a few naps on it to break them in :-)

Get yourself a little footstool for now. :-) I felt like Edith Ann on Laugh-In (am I dating my myself?) when my new sofa first arrived, but I quickly broke it in. I found this pic online; it's not me.

This is amazingly timely - My sister mentioned above just stopped in on her lunch break to bring me a large down and feather wrapped cushion that came in wrong from the store. Clients wanted new seat cushion inserts for a sofa they had bought there years ago, and what came in were back cushions, wrong shape, of course. She asked if I wanted one to make a dog bed from it, and I said sure. It's very 'full' and I had to measure the depth; it's 11"!

Thanks, roarah. It's crammed with stuff right now as my FR is being redone. I have 7 college buddies visiting in two weeks. I thought we could hang out in our new FR and enjoy our new leather sectional and armchairs, but the new room & furniture won't be ready by then. So we will hang out in this living room -- thank goodness the sofa is finished, the armchairs are delayed by 12 weeks.

I done quite of bit of reupholstering, although I am not a professional, and I would be concerned only with how the cushions stick out. It looks like the back of the cushions do not fit with the contour of the sofa.

The cushion backs look to me like they follow the contours just fine, but here's a shot for you experts to examine. I still think they're slightly too big, but we'll see how they hold up after seven house guests in a few weeks. Maybe they will soften and conform better.

If you really don't like it, I'll be an angel and take it off your hands. It's no trouble at all.

Ha! Thanks, kudzu. My MIL bought it at Macy's in 1970 -- gold damask with 3 tufting buttons. I debated adding the buttons again, but opted for a more streamlined look.

If it was purchased in 1970, it is worth reupholstering! They don't make quality furniture like that in China:/
