Unsure if color too dark for hallway???

Hi,

PLEASE IGNORE THE BLUE CARPET. IT'S THE LAST LEFTOVER PART OF HOUSE FROM ORIGINAL OWNERS. WILL BE REPLACED AFTER PAINTING.

I am painting my foyer and downstairs hallway RH Cappuccino. The living room is Latte and I wanted to do something a bit deeper since it's almost a non room and always has been painted a dull off white. However, I am unsure if it will be too dark for the upstairs hallway. Should I continue it for a nicer flow, or paint the upstairs hallway the Latte?? This is the last hurdle and will finish it this weekend, so I appreciate your opinions. Also, the living room and kitchen have touches of red accents from the dining room which is Raspberry Truffle. Should I bring touches of red into the hallway for cohesion? How could I achieve that...pictures, wt's, some red in new stairway carpet?

I think in the lighter areas it looks great, the difference between the two tones seems very subtle in the photos, if all your doing is walking from one room to the next and the darker color isn't going to be an issue, for the sake of consistency, I'd just continue with the darker color all the way up. The reason I say if...is because in our only hall we have a closet and the lighter color would help with something like that. Know what I mean?

I would continue with the darker color since it is a transitional space.

But my upstairs hallway is one shade above black, so I am biased :)

what do you mean? You think somebody could turn my window into a darker color to preview? Thank you so much for the compliment. I love my room too I was just a little bit freaked out after I finish the window just because I was so used to seeing bold dark colors. It does make sense to have the window the same color as the floor trim in the doors of course but being that these windows are so huge they make up almost an entire wall and then I see black or dark brown frames around the TV and around the bed and around the picture on the wall it got me looking at it in a strange way LOL

Before you dig out the sun rooms etc, you will want to find out if the previous owners had the right permits to build in the way that they did. There's more to just digging out the paving stones and the dirt and pouring concrete. It looks like the walls are sitting on/in dirt. That needs to change. I'm going to give you a heads up...it could be SOOOO costly to 'add concrete' that it could be cheaper to tear down the indoor/outdoor spaces and rebuild properly with all the proper permits for today's code. Sigh...no I'm not kidding about that. Imagine having to dig UNDERNEATH every single wall, jack it up from underneath (somehow) and then excavate (how do you get a backhoe into that space? Or even a small Bobcat?). Then you need to lay the vapour barrier and pour the concrete. All while supporting every wall because they have to be 'off the ground'. You are saying some of the paneling (you mean the walls?) is in rough shape. I would assume everything is in rough shape...which means there's no reason for jacking up a wall that you are going to tear down and rebuild. Before you do anything else (including new flooring) I suggest you bring in a reputable renovation company who can assess what has been done (pull old permits is job #1), what MUST be done (bringing everything to code) and what can be saved from this wonky set up. Notice I put down 'what can be saved' as the LAST item. I would expect the 'ball park' quote (without getting into massive details) should come in at 5 figures...I don't know if that 5 figure amount will start with a '1' or a '3'. It will depend on what is possible and what needs doing. But that might be a moot point if you have not budgeted for a 5 figure renovation.

We have it throughout our home. It's not too dark anywhere. This photo was taken in our living/dining/kitchen area in the evening, when things tend to be dark and "cozier", without natural or overhead lighting -- just the pendants and lamps on.

The attached article is pretty comprehensive, covering the importance of paint’s LRV level, trim and wall color suggestions, and lighting. https://www.kylieminteriors.ca/the-3-best-not-boring-paint-colours-to-brighten-up-a-dark-hallway/ Other ideas: a large mirror, leave doors to adjoining rooms open (if any), flooring has a big influence and if dark add a runner, paint doors white if they are dark. If structurally possible and budget permitting, add a skylight or solar tube.

With all the trim and the panel detail in white, I think the cappucino should look really nice. Your trim is substantial and will offset the deeper color.

I would also continue with the capucino, I do not find it too dark at all especially with all your white doors and trim.

Me too...I think the cappucino is a really pretty color; beautiful, rich, and yet neutral! I'd continue with it as well.

I think you should continue on up with the capuccino, you have that lovely trim detail on all your walls and I think it will look less cluttered to have the one color going up. Sometimes darker colors look good in smaller spaces and that capuccino does not even look "dark" to me...it looks like a medium toned color. I like it and my vote is to do it upstairs.

I don't think I ever appreciated the molding. Painting it is so hard with all the cut outs that I almost wish they weren't there. I am sure I will be glad once it's done.

I love the color; keep going for sure. Also, call me crazy, but I like the carpet. It doesn't look blue in the photos; and I love a patterned runner on steps. Beautiful home.

It looks wonderful. I too would cont. the richer color but I LOVE rich colors. Do you have an old house? I would love to see more pics. You can come paint my house anytime...you are doing a terrific job ! Really beautiful details. c

LOL, I don't want to even see paint anymore! I'll tell you what...as long as your home doesn't have moldings on the wall, I will paint anytime! Yes, the house is about 100 years old. I am just about done except for touchups on and around the moldings. Now that it is almost done it really doesn't look too dark.

JJAM: Yep it's blue and my house doesn't have any blue in it so it will be replaced with another runner probably with a pattern of some type.

Hondagirl: too late and I don't want to ever paint the hallway again. I could have continued with the latte. It might have had more flow, but I WILL be happy with this. Funny, I call this dark and everyone else says medium. Except for my Raspberry Truffle dining room, this is the "darkest" color in the home.

Thanks everyone for your input. I will post photos once I find the carpet. BTW..just for the record. Restoration Hardware paint is pretty good. Kind of reminds me of BM Aura. Nice finish and isn't drippy.
