I want to fire my GC, but I'm unsure how it will work w/$ paid

I have a Fixed Fee contract with a GC for a major home remodel for $290K. He came highly recommended, but I've found flaw after flaw. This has gone on for several months, and it has been a parade of errors. I don't want to debate whether or not I am right to fire him. I know I am.

But, where I'm concerned is this -- I have paid him $150K, based on our periodic payment arrangement. Quite a bit of work has been completed -- perhaps half. I'm not really sure. There is quite a bit to go. Certain subs are midway through the project - HVAC, Plumber, Carpenters.

While I should probably be asking a legal expert, how will I know that I have paid him too much or too little if I fire him now??? The contract was a fixed fee, based on architect plans and additional details in the contract. But, we didn't really have a "separation agreement" for what is being paid.

So, maybe my other question is this -- if we can verify his receipts for items paid by him, is there a "Standard Range" for a GC Fee (his markup/profit)? Might it be 5%? 7%? 15%? If I knew he was charging 7% above cost, then it would be easier to calculate, assuming he is in agreement.

Any feedback would be appreciated. The past few months have been very stressful for me.
