Simply pollinate all flowers (of, ummh, other Knight Star Lilies) you can get (be aware not to perform accidental self pollinations) and observe the fortcomings. In the reciprocal case however (H.cybister "Chico" as seed producer) you should decide more strategically and use but the pollen from DIPs because you have only 4 flowers on hand. I assume that "Tosca" is a DIP - and I presume that H.puniceum is a TET. Gervase is a TET, too, for sure. If I were at your place I should definitely pollinate all the 4 flowers with "Mrs. Garfield" (DIP) - that is one combination I have the very strongest vision of "obtaining the most spectacular progeny"!!! If you selfpollinate "Chico" then you must be aware that this project either fails completely, or the seed pod will contain very few seeds, often less than 10. This is at least my personal experience. AND you must conside that "Chico" is an outstanding clone of a species Amaryllis, carefully selected and released (by the breeder Fred Meyer) and this means that you would have to raise hundreds of seedlings after selfing in order to achieve a clone which is superior. On the other hand ummmmmmmmmmmmh... *g*.... I admit that the meaning of superiority is not an absolute category but might instead be strongly related to the person who performs the selection and that is, guess that, it is YOU - and you might actually find a specimen extremely attractive which is of little value according to commercial criteriums....See MoreDormancy/Storage Q&A with Mr. CB
Comments (32)Wow, 5-6 months of cool period and look at them after waking up. They look like they have been 'rejuvinated' and are so eager to grow. Last year was my first time to put my collection to rest inside the garage (potted). If I am not mistaken, the cool period was like 4-5 months and I was getting scared that it would affect them. Apparently, it did not. They woke up, bloomed nicely and grew vigorously this year. One thing is common between Dizzy's Hippies and mine. The Hippis are not unpotted or stored bareroot. Keeping the roots from drying out in this cool period must be really beneficial for them....See MoreDormancy/Storage in Holland with Mr. Paul Romjin (Royal Colors)
Comments (7)Ludwig is an original hybridizer. Quito and San Miguel is their new variety that are not on the market yet. They have released some new varieties this year that were on their sites forever now. I wish Hadeco and them clearly pinpointed out which varieties are still under development and which ones are available already. I would not ask them all the time when to expect those flowers. Ludwig has a grammatically incorrect statement under the specific varieties at least (this variety isn't come on the market yet), so I know that I should not expect those. They have just came out with Rio Negro and Bogota for instance. They are already offered in several sites, and also available on Royal Colors' site. Some of their varieties are out as cut flower already, then the bulbs come out in limited number, then in large numbers. San Miguel is available as cut flower for instance, but not as bulb. So I expect it to be out next year as bulb in limited numbers, then in mass. And I could go on with this essay. Royal Colors is out of Santa Fe already....See MoreRequest for photos: 'Mrs. B. R. Comments (21)jasminerose, what a lovely thing to say. I think those of us who grow roses, and perhaps especially those who are passionate about old roses, understand and foster each others' need to find out as much as we can about our favorite plants. I also have another great interest, which is collecting antique Chinese porcelain, and that group is equally crazy, if not more so, about that, and everything is discussed endlessly, members' new finds are posted, with many pictures from all angles, and determining the age is only a starting point (is it really antique, modern copy, truly 18th century or a reproduction from the 19th century, and so on). It actually makes antique roses look like a walk in the park, but the beauty of the roses is that they're alive, and they grow and change, and often become more beautiful with maturity. I just can't imagine getting tired of having roses in my life, as frustrating and disappointing as they can sometimes be....See MoreDave in NoVA • N. Virginia • zone 7A
