"Mystery poison ivy," contact dermatitis rash from house plants
Comments (43)I too am EXTREMELY SENSITIVE to poison ivy and recently broke out in a similar rash after being careless while propagating my all time favorite plant, the philodendron micans. I also suspected that had to be it so I took a fresh cutting and dabbed the sap several times in my arm and didn't wash off for a few hours. Somewhere between 12 & 24 hours later, I started feeling that familiar itch and watched as my test patch gradually spread out the size of a dime and rose up with the little tiny bubble pattern I'm used to seeing with poison ivy rash. THIS SUCKS! I'm in the middle of battling it right now and in my research found this helpful article. I also read another helpful tip that said the sap from these plants can somehow penetrate through standard medical gloves so thicker gardening type gloves should be used when propagating and caution should also be taken when refreshing propagation water. I plant to purchase some thick, SOLID rubber gloves that can easily be thoroughly washed. NOT those gardening gloves that have a breathable section at the back of the hand and wrists! You should also clean the tools you use and the work area. Rubbing alcohol AT LEAST 70% grade is known to be effective for cleaning tools that have come in contact with poison ivy so I plan on implementing that. As well as never shortcutting again by taking rushed cuttings and not doing the basics like laying out a protective mat and immediately washing my hands afterwards. I lazily let my NUMEROUS cuttings drop to the floor (CARPET!) and I know I didn't wash my hands right away like I normally do. A couple hours later I laid on this floor in a tank top and got a mild rash a day later across my upper back and shoulder area as well as my ear lobes which I believe is from handling my earbuds right after propagating my favorite plant. PLEASE MAKE MY PAIN WORTH IT AND LET THIS BE A LESSON TO YOU... PUH-LEAZE!...See MoreHow do you get out poison ivy among daffodils & crepe myrtle?
Comments (10)I am VERY allergic to poison ivy. Round Up works. And something else you can try that I found by to be the easiest way for me to eliminate poison ivy, and other persistent deep rooted plants as well, is to cut the main stem off near the ground with long handled loopers and put a drop or two of BROAD LEAF weed killer full strength on the stump. "Broad leaf" means it is for herbaceous plants and doesn't work on grass, etc. It's method is different from Round Up. You can just put a stick in the container of broad leaf weed killer and let it drip off onto the stump while the cut is fresh. You can very carefully remove the vine part you have separated from the root with a long handled rake or let someone else not so allergic do the whole job. It's my understanding that the broad leaf weed killer is a highly concentrated plant hormone that instructs the plant to grow faster than it can so it dies trying. It's my impression that it's less toxic than RoundUp. At least that is what I heard from one of the radio guru's years ago. Maybe someone on here can tell us whether it's true. I haven't researched it myself. This has always worked well for me and doesn't endanger the plants you want to keep that are growing near by. If I accidentally get a drop on a valued plant I just remove that leaf before it has a chance to be absorbed by the plant. This also works well on little tree sprouts like hackberry and pecan which have deep roots and are hard to pull. I carry the little yellow spray bottle of "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" filled with broad leaf weed killer in my garden holster to have handy for such jobs....See MoreDo dogs get poison ivy?
Comments (2)My two terriers don't get it but they often transfer the oils to me when we snuggle. I've had it all over my face before. We do have PI in our woods and the dogs tramp through it, sometimes lay in it....See MoreHands covered with poison-ivy like rash. No poison ivy found
Comments (9)It could be mites (plant lice), especially because they love to hide between your fingers. Does it itch worse at night? Mites are more active at night. One year, we made a scarecrow costume for my son and stuff dead grass up around his ankles and wrists. The next day, he was covered with a horrible rash halfway up his arms and legs. The doctor took a scraping and said it was plant lice, that they overwinter on dead grass. He gave us some permethrin cream and it cleared it right up, but we never did THAT again. Put some vaseline all over the rash in case it is mites. It will smother them. You can get RID for lice and rub that on those spots. Also, virgin coconut oil is very good at killing them, if you want to stay natural. I had a horrible itch on my arms once that was so painful at night that I had to put icepacks on my arms to get to sleep. I started rubbing coconut oil on my arms every night, and within a week, it was gone and has never come back....See MoreAlisande
