what do you think of ADHD in adults?
Comments (27)My son used to complain that he just couldn't read and that it would take him hours to finish a homework assignment that his friends read in 30 minutes. Luckily he is exceptionally bright and graduated high school and college with good grades. After taking the SAT he came home and said he probably failed because he kept finding himself looking out the window rather than answering the questions. Even he college he'd often call saying that he was up all night trying to finish his research so that he could write his paper. Then he went to law school - you can imagine the amount of reading required there and quickly began to fall behind. Well he was desperate and finally went to his adviser who sent him to the school psychologist for testing. They also had us fill out a 15 page questionnaire describing my son's behavior. They wanted to know everything about him - behavior in class, home, ability to make and keep friends, leisure activities, illness, health, physical abilities.... Two of the tests they gave were significantly alarming- one test had him sit and watch a computer screen. He was instructed to click the mouse every time he saw a specific number on the screen. He started out great but within minutes his recognition dropped. They did a similar test with his hearing recognition. He wore headphones and was instructed to press a button when he heard whatever the specific word was. Again he started well but quickly began missing the key word. These were just 2 samples of the multiple tests he was given. The outcome was that the psychologist looked at him and asked how he even managed to graduate from high school. My son had a significant focusing problem - indicative of ADD. However since he was bright and had a great memory he coped. My husband is a physician and I taught but we didn't recognize his ADD. His teachers didn't either. Perhaps if he had been disruptive or a discipline problem this might have been suggested as an issue. Since taking the 2 prescriptions that are commonly given for ADD he has been able to keep up with his reading and graduated from law school last year and is doing great at his job. I do believe that ADD and ADHD is often over diagnosed and too often children are unnecessarily medicated. But for those who suffer through this they deserve our compassion not our critiques....See MoreWhat do you think of 'books as decoration'?
Comments (89)what are the books that empower you ? for me, books are entertainment, novels and biographies are just that, imo. Unless it's a biography of someone who has accomplished something special that might inspire me. watching a tv show about someone inspiring, as empowering to me as reading about it. most useful book I've ever read : the Four Agreements, I still refer to it. Simple and basic. Out of all the self help, motivational books I've read, it's the only one that says it all within the confines of a very small book. I've read hundreds of novels, yet I wouldn't want to line my shelves with them or want to be judged on who I am because of them. They mean nothing to me but the fleeting escape I got from immersing myself in them. I do buy books as souvenirs/mementos, I am not a knick knack person at all. Frank Loyd Wright when I stayed at the Biltmore hotel, JP Gaultier book when I saw and loved his exhibit at the museum recently, San Fran Homes book when I did a tour of famous homes in that city, book on Tuscan Homes right after my first stay in Tuscany. Books are easy to stash in a suitcase, do not need to be bubble wrapped. oakley, your book nook is a genius idea, very original....See MoreQuestion for those using the Adult Coloring Books
Comments (12)I bought some books and gel pens last week when AC Moore had a sale 3 books for $10 (Creative Haven and more) so I picked up several. They also had a great set of 52 gel pens for $10 (reg. $24 - they have them now for $12.99 until ?) in a tin case so I got 4 sets. I colored my first pic and love the way it came out (I'll post a pic later). I get so engrossed in how to place the colors that it keeps my going for hours. I make copies of the prints so I always have the blank original. I'm giving some books and pens to family members for Christmas. Also, Staples has Sharpies fine and Xfine on sale 24 colors for $10 which is a good deal. I bought both as I can use them for my other paid art work. Suggestion: If you are buying coloring books for elder people, I'd find ones with larger spaces to color as some of the books are so intricate that someone with bad eyes and nervous or painful hands will have a difficult time, IMO. Many of the books have tiny spaces to color and it's hard on the eyes. I'm learning how to blend and add touches to give my pictures depth. FUN!!!...See MoreAll New Ball Book of Canning and Preserving - what do you think?
Comments (1)Hi Kathy - we have had some discussions about it here in the past that the search will pull up for you. One concern about it is that it isn't actually published by Ball but by Jarden Canada and is directed primarily toward the Canadian audience. You don't indicate your location - US or Canada - so this may not be an issue for you. But as a Canadian publication it doesn't have to abide by the USDA Guidelines and testing as Ball USA publications do and for some US residents that is a concern. So there are some notable differences in some recipes between it and the Ball Complete Book. The general recommendation is to evaluate the safety of new recipes carefully. This is not to say any are unsafe, just that they have not been subjected to the usual standards we have come to rely on.
