Smith's Parish a Dud or a Stud?
Comments (5)The blooms ARE on the small side, in a very China-like fashion. We used to prune our "Smith's Parish" years ago, but finally stopped fighting it. It's easily 12 ft. tall, but it's hard to measure because part of it lays over on the hillside, and has grown up to meet "Ragged Robin" on the next terrace up. WE get a lot of color. This is the full range: Remember that the different colors will appear on different parts of the plant, so when your plant is young and small, it doesn't have as much scope for that. But also, Bob Edberg tells me that the colors are most distinct and vibrant in cooler climates. Jeri...See MoreUpdate on my Smith's Parish Red Sport
Comments (4)oh, if I ever got a chance to post on it! LOL! I thought I had the only one - I got it as a gift from Ashdown. I was really really really upset when I thought I lost it. I couldn't find it on HMF, because I was looking for Smith's Parish Red Sport. Later I accidentally found it as Red Smith's Parish while looking for something else. I did a happy dance when I saw that first tiny green growth! The blooms are smaller than they look in my pictures. I'm going to propagate it now just in case....See MoreNew Update on my Red Smith's Parish
Comments (4)Thanks! The blooms are smaller than they look in my pictures, but it is a lovely rose. when it was given to me, I thought I might have the only one, because I couldn't find it on line. I was looking for Smith's Parish Red Sport. I was really desolate to think I had killed it. I finally found it in HMF under Red Smith's Parish and it says there are a couple of sources. Definately going to try to root some spares in the spring!...See MoreIt's "Orange Smith" :-)
Comments (13)Catspat -- I agree with you completely. For me, "Orange Smith" is hands-down better than 'Archduke Charles'. How nice for me! Yes. Orange Smith was a Civil War veteran from ?Pennsylvania?. I'd bet money that his mother was a Miss Orange, before her marriage. And people who descend from the House of Orange (Oranje Menaje) are justly proud of their heritage. House of Orange, princely dynasty that derived its name from the medieval principality of Orange, in old Provence in southern France. The dynasty was important in the history of the Netherlands and is that nation’s royal family. Some of you know that I am "doggy." The first Afghan Hounds I ever met were descended from the "Von de Oranje Menaje" [VDOM] line. http://www.etapauptit.com/history.html So, the name "Orange Smith" made perfect sense to me, and it didn't occur to me at the time that it might confuse the heck out of people....See Morecountrygirlsc, Upstate SC
