Multi purpose substrate

Hiya. I want to be able to just lay down vinyl flooring in my kitchen, and bathrooms for now and then come back later and install tile - possibly with heat. I was wondering if there is a certain substrate that I can spend a little extra money/time with now for the vinyl that when the day comes to tile, I can just peel back the vinyl and for example start laying mortar over that substrate (obviously not that easy, but with little prep).

I was thinking something like using 3/8" plywood substrate instead of the standard 1/4" for the vinyl, and then using 1/2" cement board atop that for a tile base in the future? I'd like to avoid extra cost for example - Ditra system - if possible.
