To fertilize or not to fertilize?

I always prepare my flower and vegetable beds with compost, leaf mold, etc. in the fall. The "old school" said not to fertilize perennials and roses in the fall. Now I am hearing fertilize so they can get ready for winter.

i would love to hear the Rocky Mountain gardeners' opinions on this

I live between Boulder and Longmont if that helps.

The reason not to fertilize in the fall is so plants don't put on extra new growth. A hardeming off needs to start occuring.

It sounds like what you're doing is likely the best, keep putting down organic matter to slowly feed the soil, and a good mulch goes a long way over the winter to keep the soil from drying out and can often keep the soil from freezing more than a few inches, if that. I don't see the point in adding fertilizer. much of the nitrogen would just leach away before spring.

Right now light doesn't matter. You can put it wherever you want to display the plant while its In bloom. Congratulations! I would advise against fertilizing at this point. You might think of nitrogen as the anti blooming chemical. In many plants, not just orchids, excess nitrogen will prevent blooming or at least dramatically reduce it. Wait until you see your plant in active growth making new roots and leaves to start fertilizing.

I started using fish emulsion for my roses last year after it was recommended by Marissa at Greenmantle Nursery. Marissa grows her roses organically. I tried multiple brands, and they do not all smell alike--with some the stench is so strong it is enough to make me want to keel over. The difference appears to be in the way they process the fish, with some cheapy brands having the most disgusting odor. I have found two brands whose products smell MUCH better than the others and which give good results with my roses. My favorite is Gro-Tone from Espoma. It's 2-2-2, and while it does smell fishy, they've added mint which makes it less so. The other brand I like is Neptune's Harvest. Their fish fertilizer is cold-processed so as not to destroy "all the good stuff". It too smells fishy, but it is a much fresher smell than other brands. I use mostly Gro-Tone, and diluted to half the strength recommended on the bottle. I find that is plenty and works well with most of my roses (only a few are more avid feeders and need a boost from a powdered organic fertilizer). Melissa

I would say that in order for something to be considered gritty mix, it needs to be good and porous, and needs to stay that way. Basically, it can't have decomposable contents that will clog the pores as they break down, thus making it not gritty anymore. Mixing stuff in with bagged potting mixes would fall under that category. I'm not saying this in order to put anyone's mix in some elite category, or exclude others from some status or gritty mix club, but it's important that what is called gritty mix is actually what a lot of us think of as gritty mix. Otherwise, the advice you may be given could lead to problems, such as the advice I gave above, assuming that when you said gritty mix, that it was actually gritty mix. Joe

Are water soluble fertilizers same as foliar fertilizers?

water soluble just means that the fertilizer dissolves in water, by no means it indicates it's exclusively for foliar feeding. generally, water soluble fertilizers are typically fed to plant roots.. but they can also be used to foliar feed as well (ie something marketed as a foliage fertilizer in a spray bottle).. i just don't think it's effective at all, especially things like fish emulsion (organic matter) which is typically not fully broken down (decomposed) so it's best to use something like fish emulsion in the soil as it breaks down over time and then become available to the plant to absorb via their roots. some people swear by foliage feeding, but the way i see it is when i am hungry i don't smear the food over my skin ;) perhaps you should do an experiment. have two plants, feed one plant the water soluble fertilizer in the soil and the other on foliage. wait a month or two and observe results..

I can't speak to a lot of perennials, only what I've learned for peonies (because you all know I'm the crazy peony lady) but it seems peony roots do benefit from the application of fertilizer in the fall before they completely go dormant. I never fertilized my peonies in the past since the beds I created were raised and filled with planter's mix. I saw so many other members on the peony forum post incredible pictures of first and second year plants that were on a fertilization regime that I'm giving it a try this year. I started early spring when I first saw the beginning of growth with an application of BulbTone, an organic bulb fertilizer, and azomite. Even with that one application I saw a remarkable difference in the size of the flowers on several of my established peonies! I'm not sure the azomite really helped though. It's stated purpose for peonies is to grow hardier stems--didn't see any improvement in that area but I'll still put it out this fall and early next spring with the BulbTone hoping that the continued use will get the results I want.
