Jade Plant Help: Sunburnt Jade and Weird Black Dots on Leaves

Hi,

I bought this jade plant a couple of weeks ago. It seems to be doing fine, but some of the leaves have me concerned about its health. If you look at the photos below some leaves have brown spots. I am aware they could be sunburnt. Should I leave these leaves on or cut them? Also any advice on how I could avoid this?

In another picture there are these black dots on the leaves. I have cleaned them off once, but then have reoccured. They don't seem to move and just stick to the leaves. What are they?

In one of the photos one of the leaves are chewed up? Would anyone have an idea what caused this?

He looks pretty beat up, so I would like to help him out. If anyone could give me advice on my jade plant it would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Leah,

The black spots look like scale insects to me...I would buy some insecticidal soap and give your plants a thorough soaking.

The brown spots look like normal wear n tear from the outdoors...I wouldn't sweat it. I have seen similar spots on jades that I have overwatered...the rot manifests as dropping leaves and sections on leaves rotting and turning brown. However my spots had more regular, smooth edges. If you're concerned then you can repot in a well-draining mix in a well-draining pot. I prefer terra cotta because I tend to overwater.

Hi Leah,

Urgently wash your plant with soap without dyes and odorants! These are the signs of chemical poisoning by retardants.

I thought that the large sellers treat their plants by retardants before importing only into Russia.

If the Jade went from growing in shade to being placed out in the Tucson sun, it definately got sunburned. It Will recover.....they are tough plants and about the only way to kill one is to overwater it.

Do not use soapy water - I know it is often recommended, but it dissolves wax on the leaves...the only soap to be used on plants should be true vegetable-based Castile soap (olive oil based). I do not have experience with neem oil, so can't comment. Lots of marks appear to be oedema (the hard, black bumps), even the bigger dry-looking patches. That happens when plant cant transpire all the water received. Other is possibility of powdery mildew, encouraged by high humidity. What kind of soil/mix is it potted in? Where is this plant kept? How much sunlight is it receiving? Even if you say it dropped lots of leaves, it looks quite etiolated - spaces between internodes are too big. That suggest not enough light. I would also suggest potting plants higher in the pot - the soil level should be higher. That will also help with soil drying up faster and general air circulation that is also important for succulents.

hey guys, it's been a while and it's gotten a whole lot hotter, i'm just mentioning this as i dont think my plant has had any growth since summer started. My other little succulent, a type of echeveria i think (or related to it) has been growing and shooting out lil buds left and right like mad, but little baby jade has been the same. i was just wondering if this is fine, do they slow growth to help conserve water and energy in hot weather maybe? i've been trying to give it plenty of sun but not too much so it doesn't get burnt because it does get really, really hot in the sun. also (sorry for all the questions, im new to this) are there any signs for overheating? i was looking at the leaves today and there are a bunch of very tiny, fine lines on em, i wasn't sure if this is normal or not but im probably just overthinking it!

I am looking at the photo from May 16th (I didn't notice it before) and that looks like some bugs. And you say they came back. Can't tell for sure what they are, but they look like scale. I am surprised, have not seen scale on jades yet (maybe just my luck?) and I have grown many of them over the years. Anyway, test if scale: take a q-tip or cotton ball or even soft tissue or rag. Moisten in rubbing alcohol and wipe over the 'thing'. Do not 'push' hard; if scale, it will die on contact and comes off very easily. Scale is quite regular in shape, circle or oval, just slightly raised in the center. Google photos of scale and you'll see how they look. They do not move, rather stay in same spot. Almost as they are glued to the plant. You could scrape scale off easily with your fingernails...I prefer the wiping. Don't like dead bugs under my fingernails, lol. If you try that, it also should come off easily. If you have to scrape hard to the point of damaging leaves, it isn't scale IMO.

Hi,

Thank you for the advice from both of you! I both some insecticidal soap and it's working great. The not so healthy leaves are falling off and the plant is growing new leaves.
