Seriously stupid question...can I put glass in an exterior door?
Comments (18)Yes this can be done. There are several options to adding a doorlite. Search Doorlite kits, doorlite frames. Most kits will come with a metal frame / metal trim. Creastview doors is a great place to start if you're looking for wood trim. You can also have a local glas company cut / make a double pane insert. It is as 'simple' as cutting a hole in the door, adding the glass, and trimming it out. The difficulting is finding the proper trim/moulding that holds the glass in place while covering up the exposed edge of the new hole. You must also consider door contruction. Although old slab doors are not that attractive, they're sturdy and well built. Even so, I wouldn't cut closer than 8" from the edge. I recently bought a '52 mid century ranch that had a solid 42" slab door. I cut three 12x18 holes in the door, fitted them with 1/2 dual pane tempered window inserts made at a local glass shop, and trimmed them out with trim that I retro fit to fit the spacing....See MoreDoes the sink HAVE to be in front of a window?
Comments (22)FWIW - I had a corner sink in our old kitchen and absolutely hated it. The space below was awful as you could not see anything inside because the cab opening was blocked as soon as you tried to reach in. Things went in the cab, but soon got lost. I also hated trying to clean behind the sink into the corner. I'd have to lay across the top of the sink to even reach near the back. I am almost 5'5", so it is not like I was too short... In our new kitchen, our sink is on a blank wall at the moment that will soon have a bs with feature (when money allows). It is no big deal whatsoever to look at a wall. In our old setup there was a cab over our sink that felt close to my face. This new way, I have room to breathe. Our windows are by our table area in our kitchen, where the view is more important. Our prep area is on the island so that I can watch tv while prepping or converse with anyone in the den or dining room. I also listen to books on tape when cooking, so the view is not important. I am engrossed in whatever story, so that keeps my mind occupied while my hands are busy. If facing a wall would bother you, you could always put up a mirror to see what is going on behind you, but frankly, who is looking around while at the sink? I do what I have to do and move on. I don't linger to enjoy any view. In our previous house, there was a window behind the sink, but it faced the street side of the house, so we kept the blinds closed. It was a total waste....See MoreFront Elevation - am I crazy?
Comments (7)Thanks for the feedback everyone! I spoke with our builder and they did make a mistake. He said they referenced the wrong plan and is going to correct it. So much for our timeline, but at least it will be right. Inside is attic space (we have a walkout basement and main floor, no 2nd) so at least it didn't mess with the floor plan. I know it's a lot of gables, and may not be to taste of many here, but my husband likes it.. and for him to like something and have an opinion on the house means a lot. I just hope he won't be too upset when we drive by tonight and see the house being disassembled instead of painted and shingled, like we'd hoped. Thanks again for all the detailed eyes and support!...See MoreTreatment for arched bathroom window over front door
Comments (7)A top down / bottom up shade might work actually....I have to look at it today with that in mind. All of the other windows have cellular blinds which are older and worn out and some are non-functioning or poorly functioning and one window definitely doesn't have a blind at all. I don't really like the idea of frosted film simply because we actually like to look out that window to check weather or look for daddy doing yard work or the neighborhood cat, etc. I feel like it would be a major loss if the window was obscured all the time. I agree that maybe painting the shutters white would look better. There is a lot of natural mid to dark wood throughout the house so its safe to say the previous owner really liked that look. We tend to go for lighter, brighter neutral with pops of color. I honestly had no idea about an ornamental leaded design......but I could see that possibly working after I searched some ideas. And yes, that is the stupidest place to put a bathroom. I have no idea what they were thinking. I think it would make a nice little office though, looking out on the front yard. I'd put built in shelves on the back wall so that's all you'd see when you looked in the window from the street....See MoreBuehl
