Looking for a new washer and I need your advice!

My reliable Maytag just bit the dust at 26 years old. Sob. I am bewildered by the many options available and the many conflicting reports, and I live in rural Maine so shopping around is very limited. A front loader is not an option as our antique cape home might not be able to handle the vibration.

I prefer simple, and want to keep the cost for the washer at $800 or less, and less is better. I'm looking for:

*Extra thorough rinsing due to skin allergies

*Good handwash or delicates cycle

*Non-locking lid

*Ability to override automatic water levels

Additionally, can someone explain to me the pros/cons of an impeller vs. agitator?

Given this scenario, what would you good folks recommend? TIA!

I have the speed queen awn432 its a grest machine and Is as close as you will get to your maytag, the Speed Queen has a nicname Speed Queen the modern day Maytag. This is as close as you will get to an old school washer. I highly recommend the speed queen awn432 I'm highly picky and only like old school washers as many here can testify to lol. And I LOVE it.

Thanks for the comment GregRod It doesn't look as if that WA484 model is available in Canada - it's not on the Samsung Canada web site and all I see on google are US sites. I went through the Samsung Canada website to pick out all the dryers with air fluff AND steam. Then looked at the major retailers to see who was selling which models at some reasonable price. The Samsung 431 set for instance lists at $2698 but the selling price at one retailer is $1698 for that set. I'm sure not willing to pay full list. I have been at this, on and off for almost a week - seaching through the net and visiting a number of stores. It really gets me that most sets, I would say 80% are that grey colour. The Samsung 431 set is listed as "Stainless Platinum", I wonder if it really is 'stainless steel' or if that is just a marketing blurb. I wish I hadn't read that many bad comments about the Whirlpool Duets or I would have bought that set already.

I have decided to go with the Rebel XTi myself. The reviews on www.dpreview.com helped me, so I would check that site out, maybe it will make your decision easier. Bear in mind that the Rebel XSi is due out in a few months. I think it is $899 with what I understand to be a good kit lens. I had debated on waiting, but Im impatient, and its a little out of budget. Its going to have a live view LCD, which is good, 12mp, and a feature that the XTi lacks, Spot Metering...a very useful tool! Anyway, Hope that site helps....good luck!

I got my new washer today. I had an LG front loader and I'm pretty sure the drain pump died, which would be an easy fix (we may fix and sell), but I've been ready to get rid of that thing since I got it. I've had dirty clothes for years. Anyway, I got the Maytag Bravos 4.3 TL. I just did a load of two sets of twin sheets and two matress pads. Now I've got two bulky twin comforters in and they fit easily. I'm pretty shocked at how much water it uses, which I'm happy about. I like water. And the rinse water is crystal clear which I never had with my FL. Although it may be because it's a new machine? I don't know. I've got high hopes right now. I know they may be dashed, so I'm only cautiously optimistic. Like I said, I'm 5'3" and this is sitting up on a 2.5" platform in my basement. No trouble reaching the bottom at all. I was worried. My ten year old who is about 4'10" reached in easily and got out the last pillowcase.

Speed Queen Top loader. I believe the ONLY right option for what you say you need and want!!

What is the Maytag not doing? They are a simple fix and in the long run you will be much happier keeping it. 26 yrs old is not old for a Maytag. My Moms is 33 yrs old with one repair. Some of them run on to be 40 or older.

Thanks for the feedback. I looked at the Speed Queen this morning, and checked at 2 appliance stores and neither could guarantee that I'd get one -- apparently the manual models are being phased out?

Anyway, I had the tech here say a bearing was sticking and the repair costs were too high for the overall age of the machine.

There are 2 Speed Queen models with electronic controls. Did you look at those?

I'd look farther..speed queen is still making the dial models until at least the beginning of the new year.

My new Maytag Bravos MVWX655DW is being installed at this moment. I might have gone for a Speed Queen but the wait was just too long. Fingers crossed!
