5+ Year Old Japanese Maple.Complex Pruning,Branch Removal Issue !!!!!

Hi and Good Day to you

Just messaging GardenWeb about an Issue with a JM..

I purchased this Tree in B&Q UK for the Princely sum of £1.50,probably around £2.50 - $3.00

Being a Beginner I do buy these Bargains regularly to learn from and to experiment with

Anyhow as you can see the branches have crossed and interwoven somewhat

The Canopy seems fairly good if a Little Sparse.Hopefully some Measured and Careful Pruning and Possibly some Branch removal will Significantly improve both the Health and Overall Appearance of the Tree

My Question to all who can help is to which of these branches will need removal to improve the Anatomy of the Tree and what the best time is to do this....

Personally I'd remove both those lower branches at the bottom just leaving the main stem but it's up to you.There looks to be enough branches above these to still have a decent looking plant.Also remove that dead branch.You could do it now,many of my maples are having a second flush of growth now,it could spur yours on to put on some nice growth elsewhere.
I've bought a few 'bargains' from B&Q in the past,usually half price though....for £1.50 you can't go wrong,well done!

I would do the same, remove both lower branches.

You scored a good deal! The pot is worth more than what you paid for the tree.

I'm in zone 6 for those who wondered... I'd never had issues with my potted maples before...and this was my first year that I even wrapped the pot with leaves, bubble wrap and burlap for the winter months. Guess that may not have been enough with this prolonged winter.... ;-( Also my plant is on an (elevated) balcony which only exacerbates any cold conditions... There's no last ditch effort I could try...maybe like 'pruning' all the branches just above a 'knob', to see if it stimulates some new growth? I suppose I could also try to scrape the bark a bit and see if I see any green underneath? And if I WERE to see green underneath, but yet still no new buds, then would conclusion could be made then? Tx!!

I am in northwest suburb of Chicago and love Shin Deshojo and Fireglow. Both would meet your height requirement as mature tree in our zone. They are very different in color. Shin Deshojo has the brightest red (slightly pinkish) color in spring and I have it in my front yard (in container) and received so many compliments from neighbors. In summer it has mixed green and red (new growth), quite nice. Fall color is more a dull red for me. Fireglow is purple red but when sun shines on it, it glows. Very nice. I have both in full sun all day. No sun burns However, I have heard several people in our zone in the facebook group that they lost their Shin Deshojo planted in ground. So I have been keeping mine in pot and winterize in my unheated garage. Fireglow is hardy in my yard, planted in ground in a very exposed, full sun location, and survived the last several winters without any die back. Purpose Ghost is also quite nice, would meet your requirements. and is hardy for our zone based on my own experience planted in ground without any winter protection.

Interesting and useful advice indeed for the little "story" about my 20-ish year old hibiscus. I don't repot, per se, as I like the pot mine is in, but I lift, root trim, and replace some soil when I can and if needed (I confess to sometimes dumping the old stuff back with the trimmed roots to rot back in, but that's not recommended, but you do what you have to do when you start this and find out you don't have enough soil to replace what you just knocked off; it works if it has to). It works well enough. And I feed regularly-- sometimes organically (rarely solid and often liquid), plus sometimes synthetics in that one, plus flush the pot occasionally in the sink or outdoors in summer to remove built-up salt (not particularly critical for hibiscus, but helpful a few times a year for many plants, and it gives me a chance to clean the drip tray and pot base). Before the counter-factual argument starts: Yes, I acknowledge that reusing soil is not recommended. I said that. Yes, I'm aware of how decay works. And yes, it does work in pots, as bacteria and fungi are active in them. No, I don't do solids every time. I said that. Top trimming, as well (and not mentioned in most of the above posts) can help keep your plant in tip-top shape. I cut back the hibiscus regularly to keep it shaped properly, and keep the growth fresh and at the height where I like it, as well as keep the blooms near eye level as opposed to near the ceiling. Otherwise, it would regrettably lose all its lower leaves. Check any good ficus guide for cutting back; as it's probably currently fully root bound and not very happy, it won't need that until well after other issues are taken care of first, but it's something to consider.

I agree. Remove the lower branches that are rubbing off the main trunk. Then try to keep a branch on each side of the trunk.. _ a similar technique is used on making bonsai and so perhaps you should just check out the formal and informal style of bonsai. Not that you should strictly adhere to the method, but it gives you a visual on what branches to keep and what to remain. I try to open up the trunk a bit more to show off its lovely shape and curve. Japanese Maples Re - Advice on Wooden Skewers

Houzi,Thx once again for the advice about the Wooden Skewers

Are you referring to the Bamboo Skewers.There are packs of 200 12" available on the Bay..

Are these better pushed into the soil with maybe just an Inch or so above the surface ?

All these Little Trade Secrets are Hugely Appreciated and will help no end

Yes that's the sort of thing Stephen.You can get them anywhere,pound shops,Wilkingsons,Tesco etc.

Yes just leave enough above soil to grab hold of.You can also stick them in dry when needed and wait a few minutes for a quick test.They even showed I wasn't watering a pot enough once...the bottom of the skewer was wet as expected and the top moist but there was a dry area in the middle.Clearly I'd been too cautious with my watering on that one :)
