What Species Of Salamander Larvae?

I
found a couple of these larvae today scrambling around in the shallow
waters of a creek here in the Poconos. I would say they
are a bit over a ½ inch. Sorry the photographs are so blurry
but they were taken just before sunset and my camera doesn't do well
in low light conditions. Anyone have any idea what species these are?

If you use facebook, there is a reptile and amphibian identification group there that will be able to answer this question quicker. My gut feeling is that it is a larva of one of the Dusky Salamanders (Desmognathus sp.). Which one depends on where you were in PA. My knowledge of NE geography is limited so you will have to consult a field guide or http://www.paherps.com/ to get a more specific id by range.

Looking up where the Poconos are, I would suggest it has to be a Northern Dusky (D. fuscus). Again, I don't live in that part of the country, so you should find someone with more experience in your local salamander fauna.

It is great to see the bigger varieties! In Ohio a popular specie is the spotted salamander. Here is a shot in the spring of this year. Still can't figure out why they call them "spotted"....maybe polka dotted would be better! -TT Here is a link that might be useful:

Did it have any distinguishing markings? It's probably a Plethodontid or Ambystomid salamander. Look at the link and figure out what species are in your range, then google search thier names to find pictures. There's probably only a couple of things it could be. Wow! What beautiful salamanders and snakes! Are dusky salamanders in New York City? I think I used to find them along a spring fed stream in both adult and larval form, even in mid winter! It was on Staten Island, in a rugged hilly area that I believe is still undeveloped. It used to be an incredible herping area. I once flipped a rock and found about a dozen small snakes under it!

I already posted on this but it deserves another congrats. I went out in the rain too with my boy and we found dozens of toads-- one monster pushing 4". Jay wanted to pick up every one we saw and look it over-- he was expert, on them before they knew what was coming. We also saw several gray treefrogs, one of them very large too. Other common frogs seen also.

Well fhfchrish, I've hung out here enough times to know that you're probably 100% correct but I'll check FB and PA Herps. Thanks for the advice and the link.
