What can I still get away with this late in the season?

Just moved into a new place and built a small raised bed. Just got it filled yesterday! I put in the herbs and strawberry plants I had already and will cover the strawberries over winter and hope they had enough time to establish before the harsh cold. Other than that I was hoping to get in some baby leaf kale and chard and loose leaf lettuce. I'll skip root veggies due to the soil having some straw mixed in. Would u just be wasting my time?

firsr frost is generally anywhere from Mid October to second week of November and I do have plastic to cover is need be.

Then you should be able to do all the things on your list as long as you are prepared to cover if needed. I'd add spinach, mesculn, arugula, and short DTM broccoli to the list.

Beets.

one of the best cool seasons things to grow because not only does it grow quickly (about 50 days) you get a "double-banger" ... the beet + delicious greens. if cooked like spinach, beet greens are way better IMO, even the red stems are edible and tasty. in fact, the greens are so good i sometimes just grow beets for the leaves and don't bother letting the beet root develop past the size of a marble. it's only about 25-30 days for the greens..

and on top of all that, they're one of the healthiest things you can grow. :-)

It's never too late to plan or plant. In fact, I learned a lot from my first year of planting and from each plant failure. Actual container gardening experience can be quite surprising at times from general guided expert gardening instructions. Nothing beats lessons and confidence learned from hands-on experience. Many vegetables, herbs, and flowers can be planted year around successively, and many are best planted in fall. I also found out many (and majority) of the flowers I'm interested in growing next are best planted in late summer and the fall in my region. Waiting does require patience, but it also gives me more time to get to know the plants ahead of time and plan and refine my vision. Due to regional climate and temperature differences, I would start by searching for local resources and planting calendars for vegetables you are interested in eating and growing for best results and confirmation if you don't get sufficient ideas or replies here.

I just today transplanted some tiny Great White tomatoes. I seeded some Ruby Queen corn, and some Golden zucchinis, so I sure hope its not too late!! We have crazy weather here, there was no way to start anything from seed even as late as first week in May, we were having 40 degree nights. I know lots of folks replanted squash, beans etc, that they lost from rain and cold in our area. I had the garden plowed and tilled WAY too early (April) so now it is overgrown with johnson grass and weeds, so its all I can do to clear out and plant a small patch each day! I have Silver queens that are sprouting and growing well, kandy Korn a foot or more high, so I thought i would get a 3rd flavor going! next week I seeding some Sugar Dots too. It may be late, but Im planting anyways! I see some corn and other plants here that are waist high, and others that are tiny, so lots of people planted late, so I think its okay to start whenever you can, just protect your plants later if it gets cold quick in your area, I know we wont have cold until at least Oct.

Late Season Strawberries - anyone else still harvesting?

Oh yeah, we're still getting strawberries, they're still flowering too. We just picked a handful of good sized super red strawberries this weekend. I have no idea what kind we have, just regular old strawberries. I guess we have them in just the right spot in the yard so they get plenty of sun, but are shaded from the heat of the afternoon. Plus we've had just awesome weather so far this summer.

I'm in the same boat. I'm in Toronto and planning a ten-day to two week trip in the second half of April. I can't change it and I've already sown seeds, but my DH will be home so I'll have to content myself with leaving him detailed instructions. I've had spinach winter over and start growing again in the early spring without any covering. See if there are any local growers around who might have seedlings available. The backyard grower I get tomato plants from in spring is now offering seedlings for fall. Also, check with any gardening neighbors if you live in a hilly area. I'm in the colder part of zone 5 but because we're at a low elevation with hills on three sides, my garden gets a light frost around Sept 18. If I cover with something like Remay (I have a portable tunnel covered with Agribon) I can keep bush beans going for another couple of weeks. After a couple of cool nights, it usually gets warm again. Bush beans are about 6" high right now so I'm not sure I got them in early enough this year.
