pesky rocks ...

ynot

I'm digging some areas in the yard that haven't been planted in: getting out the weeds and grass, digging in kitchen scraps, etc. Came across an area that has a sizeable rock (too big to dig out) about 10" below the soil surface. Began digging in an adjacent area and found the same thing. Does this preclude planting in this area? (I would think that root crops would be out of the question but what about tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, Swiss chard, green and pole beans, etc.) Do these veggies have long tap roots that might be blocked by these rocks? Would the rocks create any kind of a water drainage problem?

Apologize for being so flighty. The ex, who also uses this forum a lot, usually helps out with the gardening, meaning that he provides all the brawn and most of the brains! But I intend to try this on my own.

Thanks.
