Mine is 10.5", with an 8" wide shelf(~7" usable space). I'm planning on putting my big clubhouse spices in it, but will leave the little spices for the drawers. I think I will put my fancy vinegars in as well, but beyond that I'm not sure! Maybe boxes of soup powders.. The bottom shelves are definitely less accessible than the top, especially when you are putting tall stuff in the top shelf. It was worth it to me just go get my big Costco spices on it though, I hate digging through them when they are in the cabinet, and use them often enough that I want them close to counter height. Below is a photo of when I was "playing" with it before the counters were put on. Counters are on, now time to line and load!

I'm surprised anybody likes those cabinets. I had one in my last kitchen and really hated it. I would never choose to have one again. The upper section was OK for storage for some items but the bottom section was useless, imho. If I had a similar width to fill, I'd rather have storage for cutting boards, cooking sheets, or trays.

My journey. I had one of these for spices in a previous kitchen. I hated it. I couldn't read the names of my spices. I wasn't going to invest in special spice bottles. I said I'd never have one again. Live and learn.

Fast forward, new house, new kitchen. I've got one of these in this kitchen. We removed two of the shelves. I put my vinegars on the bottom. My oils are on the top. I really like it. It's been a pleasant surprise.

I thought it was a great idea until I started thinking about what I would store in it and how I would access it. It occurred to me that the best idea was to use it for oils, vinegars and other such items that are bigger, taller and don't require reading glasses to see the label. I think some of my small appliances (mini cuisinart, hand mixer, extra Vitamix jar, etc.) could live on the bottom. I don't like the idea of having to squat down to see what is on the middle and/or lower shelves. Kind of defeats the purpose for me, which, I guess that's my way of saying spices would be too difficult, I think.

That's why I mentioned that I used mine for condiments, not spices. I also only have two shelves. The bottom shelf is half empty (my pull-out is 13-1/2" wide) - I ought to think of something to store there.

I agree that I wouldn't want small spices in the pullout. Instead, I'm using mason jars with labels on the lids and putting them in drawers. I also only want two rows of items in the pull out so I can see the labels. I ended up filling my pull out last night with my olive oils, vinegars and my big clubhouse spices(roughly about 1L each). I removed two shelves, so I am only using two because of the height of my vinegars and olive oils. I am pleased so far with the accessibility, but I suppose only time will tell!

i also have narrow pan cupboards, which i feel for me are absolutely necessary. If I was picking between the two, I probably would pick the pan cupboard, but I'm quite excited to have both now!

I am doing two 11.5" 3-drawer cabinets on each side of my stove. I didn't want a pullout like that, so my two top drawers will be shallow drawers and the bottom will be extra tall to accommodate cutting boards on one side and oils, etc on the other.

If you can squeeze out a few more inches, perhaps you can do drawers.

Thanks for everyone's input. I see that most have stated they wouldn't use the pull-out for spices. Right now my spices are at the end of my island in four rows that fill the entire end of the cabinet. Therefore, the last row is just as low as the bottom shelf of the pull-out. I alphabetize my spices, which, perhaps, is one reason it's not difficult for me to find what I have stored there. Maybe that would work for the pull-out. If not, I might use it for oils and vinegars, etc.

I don't need a place for baking sheets and pans, as I will do the same thing I did here---have DH put dividers in the deep cabinet above the refrigerator. I bought some sturdy dividers at Lowes or Home Depot, and then he spaced them according to what I wanted to place in each section. It works beautifully.

Going to investigate the "chef's drawer," as that does look very useful.

I have a 9 in pull out base. Each drawer is 4.5 inches wide. It was made by the cabinet line. The shelves are adjustable in height.... I generally fit 3 offset rows of spices across each one, so yes indeed it is hard to see the middle row. Labels on the lids could solve that for sure. It works just fine. I'm glad I didn't take a horizontal drawer for these --- I have way too many utensils for that. I keep oils, vinegars and condiments on the lowest shelves. I also have a 9" vertical tray, which is a bit narrow (with inset cabinets). I also have a narrow towel drawer, which is need but not used nearly as much as I would like.

i currently have a 9 inch pullout on either side of my range. I keep my oils and large seasoning bottles on hand here for quick access while cooking. However, If i were to redo my kitchen, I would only get 6" pullouts. The 9 inch is too wide so many items stack against each other and are harder to see and take out. I prefer to just do a narrower pullout with items stacked in a single row. if you are stuck with 9" of space, consider doing a 3" and a 6" pullout instead. the 3" would be good for small spices, the 6" for larger things like oils.

I have one like Homechef's next to the cooker and use it the same way...using only two shelves with vinegars, oils, oyster sauce, hot sauces, etc....plus cayenne, garlic powder, Cavendars, i.e., the most often used or tall condiments associated with stove top cooking. I like it for how I use it. But using anything more than two shelves would be a PITA because it would be hard to see the stuff on the middle shelves and a little difficult to retrieve them. IOW's not at all ideal for rows of small spice jars (though labeling the top of the jars would help.) My favorite way to store spices is only narrow shelves with the spices only one layer deep in a between-the-studs wall cabinet. I've had such storage in a couple of kitchens (though they were never 'big enough' to fit my collection of spices) but no way to incorporate one in this kitchen. But if you have the wall space, that is what I would suggest as a good way to deal with them.

However, given that you are thinking of using it in an island, a 9" pullout would be great next to the sink to store cleaners, DW detergent, liquid soap, etc.

michou, I had a 9" one in my previous home, and went bigger rather than smaller. My current one is 13-1/2" and I love it. It's easy to see everything and I don't have to cram anything in. The bottom shelf is for less-frequently used items.

I have the slightly larger rev a shelf pullout in a 12" cabinet. I love it for oils, vinegars, and other larger bottles. My spices are in a drawer, labeled and alphabetized. Love the set up.

We have a similar pullout and use it for spices. I love it and would do it again.

Ours is directly across from the stove and we store kitchen utensils, oven mitts and cookie pans. It works ok for us!
