Would you buy a Easter Cactus in bloom?
Comments (14)Hi Toni, Thank you, I really like it too. I just hope it stays as pretty as it is now. It should I do have CC & TG that are all doing well. I repotted them over the winter when they were done blooming, they needed it bad, so I hope I will still get flowers next year. They are just now starting to put on new growth, they really sleep hard in the winter LOL. As for the new EC, it does have a drip pan no liner, it's a wicker basket so it will breathe, there was a sheet of pink ?? not foil, not tissue paper, kind of a foam-like sheet. As soon as I touched it to take it out I thought what a good idea, it feels as tho it would not create the problems that foil does. I don't like the look of any of it so I took it out, but I think it would be idiot-proof to those who like it, as in it wouldn't rot the plant (I think so anyway). This came from our highest end flower/plant/nursery shop. I usually don't even go in there as they are so high priced, but there is a lot of satisfaction knowing it was cared for by people that know what they are doing. My mom bought it for me for my B-day and she insisited I have it. I don't know if you read any of my other posts, but my Dear Dad died on the 22nd of March, he loved all holiday cactus, so I thought it would be a good plant to get and each spring when it blooms (God willing) it will be a cheery reminder of my oh so wonderful Dad. It's not like it was a hundred dollar plant, it was only $25.00. So it's not like I gave up my first born to get it, (tho that's a thought) Kidding. I saw those crown of Thorns at our HD as well this past week. Some of them literally had several inches of water standing in the pot, it looked as tho it had been there a while, kinda merky. RRGGHH. No plant should have to go thru that. D's. . . Ants? I never heard of that before. But then I don't put anything outside. I learned my lesson a few years ago when I put a beautiful asparagus fern outside. I thought I had acclamated it enough, guess not, it got so burned, but I still have it. I used to have one outside that got so bushy you couldn't see thru it, it hung down 3 ft and had the sweetest orange and white flowers on it. I am just now experimenting w/ D. cuttings. I put them in moss and a zip lock bag, we'll see how they do. Denise from Omaha has a wonderful web page in her profile that shows off a lot of them. She is also very knowlegable when it comes to them. I'm one step ahead of you as far as duplicating the environment for the EC. I have it in my office, the coolest room in the house, there is also a humidifyer in here, set on low. It sets in front of a east window but there is a tree outside so the light is very dappled. I also have a sheer on the window so if need be I can pull it closed. Ever since I brought it home tho it has been cloudy, go figure. The flowers close up at night. I didn't know that. There are 4 opened now, there would probably be more if it were sunnier outside. Enough babbling, enjoy your little cutie, Debi...See MoreMy Thanksgiving Cactus is Budding! :)
Comments (38)This is a very exciting thread I must say! I have a number of TCs that have bloomed or are still in bud. I keep mine out on the balcony till late October when temps can drop all the way down to 3-5 degrees C. Once the buds reach some 5mm I take the plants in and keep them at room temps while they are blooming. They then are moved to their winter quarters where I also overwinter my Epiphyllums and Selenicereus at 3-5C at night and around 5-10C daytime. I do let the soil go dry before I water and while dormant I hardly ever water at all. In the picture below is my white TC a month ago - I fully agree with the observations on the purplish tinge to the petals - happens if you keep your plants at lower temps when they're setting buds - clearly my case. A completely white TC, including the pistil, is a very rare variety, not as rare as to warrant $100 for a small cutting of course, but still. Lena...See MoreIt's Thanksgiving Cactus time! Comments (85)Hello! I am new here, but I also love these lovelies. In Latvian shops unfortunately we don't have labelled Schlums. They are sold as "Christmas cactus" and the shop assistant looks at you weird if you call it "Thanksgiving cactus". I guess it's because we don't celebrate Thanksgiving and not everyone has given a thought about schlums. Today I asked if they know names for schlums they are selling. The answer was no, there isn't any label to see where it has come from so my cacti are NOID, but I have tried to ID some by looking at photos. Today I think I bought "Samba Brazil" *squeals*, I will post photos tomorrow. Today I want to post photos of two I have no idea what they are called. Since files were huge I put links. Perhaps you could play ID for me please? Maybe there is someone who can ID them just looking at photos *looking around hopefully* Yellow one: http://s141.photobucket.com/user/brunhilde100/media/Schlumbergera/DSC_0001.jpg.html http://s141.photobucket.com/user/brunhilde100/media/Schlumbergera/DSC_0002.jpg.html http://s141.photobucket.com/user/brunhilde100/media/Schlumbergera/DSC_0003.jpg.html Orange: http://s141.photobucket.com/user/brunhilde100/media/Schlumbergera/DSC_0004.jpg.html http://s141.photobucket.com/user/brunhilde100/media/Schlumbergera/DSC_0005.jpg.html http://s141.photobucket.com/user/brunhilde100/media/Schlumbergera/DSC_0006.jpg.html http://s141.photobucket.com/user/brunhilde100/media/Schlumbergera/DSC_0007.jpg.html http://s141.photobucket.com/user/brunhilde100/media/Schlumbergera/DSC_0008.jpg.html This post was edited by Lii-sama on Fri, Jan 3, 14 at 15:01...See MoreEchaveria arial roots & Christmas cactus rooting
Comments (3)I rooted mine in perlite. In standard sized gritty mix I found it can be challenging. Don't keep it too wet in whatever mix you use because they can still rot. Aerial roots are usually indicative of watering/root/soil issues. However, plant offsets will naturally grow aerial roots. When I don't water my plants enough, my aerial roots get bigger....See MoreBen was 10a/26, now 7a/34
