Adding an addition and updating exterior of home

My house was built in 1995, I am not sure what style it is. We want to add a garage and a second story above the garage for a master bedroom. Right side of the house use to be a 2 car garage and was converted to a bedroom. We want to put the garage back in, and actually make it a little bigger.( 3 car garage) We also want to add an upstairs for a master bedroom and bath. My house looks like a cookie cutter house from the 1990's. I want to change the exterior a bit. Any suggestion? We are thinking of making the addition a cape style roof with 2 dormers. We were also thinking of putting stone veneer on the front of the main house. Not sure if she should keep shutters, or not. Please help!!!

If adding a second floor MB over the old garage you will loose that roofline. I would extend the porch to that side ..I would also be careful of how I placed the windows and maybe do something with the existing windows on the second floor now after the addition.Everything just looks to symmetrical to me.It looks like 4 separate boxes put together.

Be very careful that you don't price yourself out of the neighborhood here. Cost vs. Value 200K for a project of this nature wouldn't be out of line. Take that money and look at what you can buy elsewhere that would fit your needs already.

Our original concrete outside stairs are now inside our house thanks to a previous owner. Our stairs went directly out from the original basement back door, not sideways like yours. Our stairs are now inside our backdoor and are the final run of stairs to our basement. An addition can definitely happen. How you handle the stairs depends on how large an addition you hope for. I'd be more concerned about what new outside finish you'll have to coordinate with the original brick. Odds are very high you won't be able to match the brick.

I like all of it! I like the tiles and I especially love that you are going with terrazzo flooring. I absolutely hated to lose my terrazzo floors after the flood but it was a must. I do still have terrazzo white in my atrium but they are not very white right now. I have a guy over today and tomorrow cleaning all of the windows and skylights and he will power wash the atrium terrazzo too. You are going to love it! Don't second guess! Just go for it. I would look at other brands of faucets because I too have seen similar for less.

am unsure how to advise you on adding space without seeing a floor plan or at least photos of other sides of the house. As far as updating the exterior the first thing I would suggest is replacing the columns at the entry. They are undersized and really aren't appropriate. The brick looks good enough that I wouldn't advise painting it. It provides a nice contrast to the siding. I would suggest replacing the garage door with one that has character. Would suggest installing one that has windows or lites in the upper portion. Garage doors with windows do more to alleviate a flat facade and give the house more depth. Good luck!

Your architect should take a holistic attitude towards the project and deal with the issue of the big blank garage in front of the house. This will not be a cheap project. Several hundred thousand. Be sure to verify that your architect is actually an architect. It’s a state regulated term, and most states have a professional lookup online for architects and contractors both. A software manipulator isn’t an architect.

Precision carpentry I agree abt the windows. I am not sure what to do. We need a garage, so I have to put one In there somewhere or add an addition for a garage. And live_wire_oak. I understand your point, but the house is on my parents' farm. We bought it a few years back from a family member. We don't owe much on it. We had plans to build in the spring, but can't find any other family members who are ready to buy our house. So if I am staying I want to give my house a face lift. We are in a beautiful location with fields all around us. So I feel very comfortable putting the Money in the house. I just need help getting a 3 car garage and adding a master bedroom or extending the current master bedroom. We have lots of room to extend the house. Any ideas?????
