I don't consider myself an expert, but since no one else has replied, here's how I do it.

There's a schefflera in my office that's Very Happy. When we moved offices, the owner pruned it and gave me a branch. I now have a similarly Very Happy and 6-foot tall schefflera in my cube.

All you have to do is cut off a branch (not the leaf, an actual branch) and put it in water. In several weeks, the stump will start growing roots. The key here is to be patient and lazy. Let the stump grow a lot of roots, then transplant to a pot. I gave one of my coworkers a cutting, and he planted it too soon, and it died. Wait until there are a lot of roots.

Thanks Robin. I think I have a branch, but no stem. Do you think it will work? I have already placed them in water and am basically waiting for roots to grow... No luck so far though...

Edit: Oh and about your co-worker, I am surprised that transplanting too soon caused his/her cutting to die since videos online show people placing stem cuttings directly into the soil without keeping it in water. Perhaps stems are more durable than branches?

Rose Beyaz - if you do indeed have just the petiole and leaflet I don't hold out much hope for yours growing. Schefflera are pretty easy to propagate but you do need an actual stem. If you could post that picture we could tell you for certain what you have.

I had a similar situation to you - I tried to propagate a schefflera I received from a funeral - and foolishly took just a cutting off a petiole before I understand the biology of the plant enough to realize that it was a petiole and not a "branch". It looks like I might have taken mine a month or two after yours. It took a very long time to see much happening below, but given that the leaves weren't withering and looked healthy I hadn't given up -- and as of this morning I looked at the bottom of the plastic dixie cup I stuck it in to root and was surprised to finally see the tail ends of some roots poking around. So I believe the petiole CAN root, if you're lucky - I just have no idea what that means for the plant after it establishes a root base. I'm pretty sure the petiole/leaf structure at the top is not going to do much else, so my hope is that the roots eventually send up a new trunk/stem along side it. Time will tell. Hopefully by now you've determined if you have similar luck with your petioles.

I never tried to root one in water. We always rooted them in sand and sprayed them daily with the hose.
