Soft-close side-mount drawer glides? Or stick with Blum?
Comments (19)ash5181 - We bought several different slides and tested them on drawers. These were the best of what we could find (either online or in big box stores). They were a bit stiff at first, but repeated use has mellowed the resistance from the soft-close mechanism. I'm really glad we installed soft close, but I wish we had researched more before building the drawers. Turns out, undermount slides require a higher mount for the drawer base (to provide room/mounting surface for the Blum slides) - and DH was NOT going to rebuild or start again. A few slides are giving us trouble, but that could be installation error, as they are tricky to shim/balance. We learned a lot, and will be uber-prepared for the next kitchen :)...See MoreBlum soft close with inset doors?
Comments (12)Jaymie, I know what you mean about the waiting. Sometimes I think it was even harder for me with my DH so close by in the garage. I love the smell of sawdust from wood projects (my dad was a cabinet maker) so I was always checking to see what he was doing and if I could help - you know, speed things along. ; ) I'll be looking forward to seeing your cabs, too! Thank you, remodelqueen and pluckymama (cute name!). I am really proud of what we have accomplished. Now to finish it! It's actually been 95% done and functional for some time but we switched the fridge location which left a 5 ft. space for a nice built-in hutch. So it was back to the lumber yard. Bet you can guess my DH didn't mind that one bit. ; ) Here's a pic of the hinges. They're from Horton Brass, satin nickel. Really nice quality. They don't take up much room at all. We also don't notice any loss of space from the insets. I think if you're really tight on space it might matter but storage needs can be met with them, especially if you're not a collector of every gadget or don't need three of everything. HTH! Comments (9)The longest I have - which is 24". I have 2 of those that length. I will say that prior to the countertops being installed, we used the contractor's long level (a long one that spanned several cabinets) - and we checked out the leveling of the base cabinets. They were spot on, side to side, front to back, wherever we laid the level. I will say that is the one thing he seemed to do well. I was thinking about contacting Kraftmaid, as we had this issue with the pull out trash. A Kraftmaid rep happened to be at our house for something else - and the rep fixed the pull out trash as we told him our contractor said he had done everything he could to get it level (one side was not level). The rep fixed it. I don't know exactly what he did to fix it though, I was speaking with the other person there with him about the issue they were there about....See MoreBlum vs. Hardware Resources hinges & drawer slides
Comments (12)@jdesign_gw Thank you for your input. I really appreciate your getting back with me on this. My slide photo posting was probably a mistake as I would imagine my cabinet manufacturer uses undermount, but thanks for the reminder to check on this for sure. This particular shop indeed does a high volume of work constructing mostly commercial cabinetry, so I can see that the cost savings for them could add up, but it is odd that given their claims to superior quality with all they do they've chosen the "knockoffs" as @live_wire_oak said for such an essential part of the cabinetry. I've seen another poster talk about Blum being an optional upgrade in another cabinetry line, and it was only going to cost about $300 USD extra, not sure the number of cabinets in that order, but it surely couldn't have been more than my 9-cabinet kitchen. I was able to try out one door with a Hardware Resources hinge at my cabinet maker's main office, and the soft close feature seemed to start quite far out in the travel path and go quite slow. The Blum hardware I've tested in showrooms seemed to have a more refined action than that, which is why I was surprised by the slow, stiff movement of the Hardware Resources hinges. I saw one comment somewhere that Blum uses silicone parts in some styles that can wear out in time and the knockoffs like Salice that use all steel in the production are supposed to last longer, but in all the reviews I've read of Blum versus many other brands including Hettich, the one thing you'll hear repeatedly is that the action is smoother with Blum. We'll sit down and discuss this cost again before we finalize the order, so thanks everyone for the input. The cabinet maker is definitely willing to offer Blum, but it sounds to me like from our discussion that he'd really rather not given the trouble, and he'll charge us a lot for this upgrade....See Moresanjuangirl
