Accuride vs Blum soft-close glides--help asap
Comments (14)We are not providing the glides, the furniture maker is. If we specify that we want Blumotion glides, he will get them for us (though, as I mentioned above, his guys aren't used to installing them). Our only experience with soft/self closing drawers has pretty much only been with Blum. When our kitchen cabs were delivered, we'd noticed that some of the glides were Blum, and some were KV's (Knape and Vogt), even though Blumotion glides had been specified in our contract with our KD. As I recall, we did notice a difference between the two brands when playing around with them (I don't remember if they just felt different, or if it was that the KV's were noisier, or the Blums operated more smoothly, but we definitely preferred the Blumotion glides). All incorrect glides were replaced during our install with Blum without a hassle, BTW. We have had a few drawers stop just short of closing fully on occasion, but eventually it clears up on its own (which leads me to think it's dust or debris on the glide itself, as mentioned on that thread you linked caryscott). Otherwise, we're happy with the way they work, which is why we requested soft/self closing glides in our buffet. The only thing our guy told us about the Accuride glides (besides more sizing options with them, which isn't an issue given the sizes of our pull-outs) is that initially there is some resistant when pulling open a drawer (FWIW, we don't seem to notice much resistance with our Blumotion drawers and pull-outs; don't know if what he is describing would be anything more than that) . He thinks that all of these German-engineered/manuf glides are pretty much the same, just that Blum has a more widely recognized name. We might be leaning towards Blum, especially since its what we are familiar with, just hate the thought that his guys might have difficulty installing them (thereby causing problems from the start or at some point down the road). pharaoh, have you any trouble installing Blumotion glides, or would you say they are any more or less difficult to install than Accuride?...See MoreAre your drawer glides side or under mount?
Comments (7)I insisted on undermount. It's a "thing," I don't like seeing the glides on the side. I'm sure there was some loss of depth, but I don't feel it. Plenty of storage. It makes the drawers beautiful opened or closed. Not a big fan of the self closing feature, I've actually removed the doohickey from several of our drawers, particularly the larger pot drawers. I like having it on the pullout trash and recycling though. Dovetail is stronger construction, so your husband is wise to insist on that, if you can afford it. Comments (46)I'm guessing that place in Santa Ana was Austin Hardwood? If so, I seriously doubt they were mis-packaged intentionally by Austin, but still hard to understand how K-Vs came out of Blum packaging? I buy all my glides and hinges there, one of the best selections in Orange County, and a reputable old time family business. As others have mentioned, to accommodate Blum bottom mount glides, drawer boxes must be ordered and made specifically with the proper recessed bottom. Your drawers have the 1/2" side clearance to accept side glides, and very unlikely have the bottom recess to enable the use of bottom mount glides no matter what mfg. FWIW, I've liked and used Accuride side mount glides for dozens of years with great results. Especially for extra heavy large drawers, pantry pull outs and file cabinets......See MoreBlum drawer glides overkill for small drawers in kitchen?
Comments (9)I neglected to say that Barker has great instructions for measuring Blum and another, side type. Other than that, you'd have to dig the specs out of the manufacturer's website. You're getting into some tedious work. I would consider either having him remake the drawers completely, buying new ones, or getting glides that fit better in the space and with the drawers you have. This is getting to be way too much work than I'd take on, and I will fuss with something for months. The one and only modification I'm going to make to a drawer to make it fit my space, is on a 17" deep drawer. The next glide is 18" and they must match. I'll put a piece on the back of the drawer above the notches, and drill the little holes for the glides. But that's about as retro on drawer boxes as I'm willing to go. One cabinet I'm retrofitting, is going to get drawer boxes I got at a reuse center. Nice and deep, but definitely not Blum Tandem ready. They're going to get the old fashioned Blum 230 (or KV) types. They'll only hold towels in the MBR, so I don't care. Better to have drawers than 2 reach-in cabs. They're getting inset doors, too. It's A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. how much cat fur will settle into a cabinet between an overlay door and its cabinet box. Enough about me. I would suggest you either reconsider this endeavor, or how it's to be accomplishd....See MoreFori
