Putting HVAC return air in kitchen?

Hi all,

We are converting part of the garage into living space and have to move the furnace into what's left of the garage. With that move, we also need to change where the return as is.

The contractor we are going to work with had the idea of running the flue on the back of a small closet we have next to entrance, and put the return air box in there as well, and change the solid door into a louvered one. I would be losing the whole bottom part of the closet up to around 25".

In order to not lose that space, and also not have a louvered door which won't match rest of the house, I was thinking if we could put the return in the kitchen. It's not really the kitchen, but nook area which is actually 20ft from stove. Actually farther from stove then the closet, except between kitchen and closet there is a door. We don't cook much at all and rarely fry anything. We also live in San Francisco bay area and usually use heater from October to March usually at night. During winter, we might have it on and off on thermostat.

So, what do you think of putting it in nook area instead of the closet? The contractor said it can be done, but probably on the floor because there would not be enough flow if on wall.

What are your thoughts?

Red circle is where the furnace will be located on garage, right below nook. Red would be the proposed new spot, green is where it's planned now.

Thank you very much
