Tree Band Fiasco

I'd noticed lots of trees had lots of holes eaten in their leaves and heard a lot about Winter Moth, so I experimentally tried a Tree Band/Barrier band around a tree. The tree was at my parent's place, so I kind of forgot about it. Well, I finally took it off, and the bark beneath it was crawling with earwigs and pill bugs/isopods. The bark was damp and looked like it was starting to rot...there were patches of what looked like dirt on it. The tree was *NOT* girdled.

Did I inadvertently kill the tree? Is there anything in particular I should do to help the tree? Scrub off the "dirt", spray it with insecticide or fungicide? I think the tree is a basswood, if that matters.
