Home thermostat with a mind of it's own

Hello!

I have a Bryant furnace/AC with a thermostat model# TSTATCCCAC01-B.

It has a Mode function(heat, cool, off) and a fan (on/off), with up/down buttons for setting the temp.

The "fan" and "temp" buttons work perfectly... the "mode" switch is driving me crazy! It will not always immediately react to an attempt to change it, then suddenly switches to different modes between 3-7 days later. Sometimes, it will react immediately, then changes later. I recently had a 24 hr period where I didn't touch it where it went from "off" to "cool" to "heat" to "off" to "heat". I can keep the furnace/AC off by changing the temp setting (below 70 when it's on heat, 85 when on cool).

My questions:

1) Is it just the thermostat?

2) Can I replace it with a Carrier model# TSTATCCBAC01-B? (I cannot find anyone selling the Bryant model) without having to change the wiring? I probably could, but don't really want to...

Thanks for your help!

Fletch
