A little durian fun
Comments (19)I must admit, Jay is mostly correct. I have never met a durian that I wouldn't try, with the one exception being the bag that was left in the car for several days. I actually did that on purpose because I LOVE the smell of ripe durian! ;-) Speaking of smell, the frozen 'Monthong' you can buy in Asian food stores has only a faint smell of a fresh durian, but you can get the idea. The texture remains fairly close and the flavor is pretty close as well. I think of durian as an acquired taste. I recall the first time I tried it (frozen) and I thought to myself, "what is all the fuss about?". Its sort of a mushy blob of flesh, custardy with onion overtones perhaps, but I was not at all impressed. (In my opinion it is the texture that turns off most Westerners as we don't really have any other fruit that is similiar in this regard.) The next time I tried it (still frozen), it was better, and the aroma was starting to grow on me. By the time I reached Thailand, I was hooked, a serious durianophile! You have to experience it to believe it. Now I can detect the faintest smell in the air, and I am drawn to it. There is a saying in Malaysia (I believe), that "when the durians come down, the sarongs go up", which is a reference to the aphrodisiac qualities attributed to the fruit. I recall being in a department store once with a few pieces of durian in a sealed plastic bag, and I couldn't help but notice several girls walking by and smiling. I was starting to feel pretty good about myself until I realized that they could smell the durian! lol It was really nice to get my celebrity status 15 mintues of fame in Thailand as every time this "farang" would eat durian, I seemed to draw a crowd of locals staring at me. I'm not sure if they were waiting to see if I would like it or to see if I would get sick. Either way, I rarely left a piece behind. I think the province where the expensive "Kanyeow' durian was grown was Nonthaburi. The soil there was said to impart the perfect taste. I was too cheap to spend $100+ for a fruit to find out. Maybe next time. As it stands, just like everywhere else the population is growing there and land (and a flood as I recall) have reduced the growing area in that province, making the fruit even more expensive. I really can't believe that the guy can stomach all the stuff he eats but can get down some durian. It may be that he just doesn't like it, but I suspect that he might be just trying to add to the mystique of the fruit. Pepperot - chilled durian and sticky rice! Comments (6)Yes, designing a basement space around mechanicals causes much compromise. I believe our basement depth is very similar to yours - finished floor to ceiling is 89.5 with a 10" drop to accommodate the ducting which for ours runs throught the middle. I'm not certain I understand the "room to room" exchanger. Connected to the fireplace above but does it just "dump" warm air into the basement? If yes, why can't you simply install a vent in the ceiling or wall rather than encase the duct section. If it runs to another room on the main level and "radiates" heat into the basement, enclosing it will minimize the radiant heat. If you must enclose, can you install drywall at 45 degrees to create a tray ceiling effect? Might minimize the look of intrusion into the room. My preference would be to just enclose the ducting and if your hutch is planned to remain below, the soffit will not be an eyesore. Are you using 2 x 4's for strapping across the ductwork to create the box. If you change to 3/4" ply you'll pick-up 3/4". I personally would not build any soffits to "balance" the room unless you can create the tray ceiling effect and your windows create a problem doing that. Here's a link to our basement. Comments (7)Welcome to Kitchens! Your plan looks very symmetric and balanced, and not as functional as it could be. My first concern is the aisle between the range and island. Unless the scale is off, it looks as if it's little more than 24". It should be 42" minimum, so I think the island needs to be 5' instead of 6.5'. You have very little prep space between the sink and range, which is the most functional space for prepping. I've cut and pasted several options, each keeping different elements of your original plan, but each more functional, IMO. Top left - original for comparison Top right - shorter island, more prep space between sink and range, view through windows while prepping, could be diagonal corner--see mushcreek's corner in this thread Bottom left - shorter island, more compact/efficient work triangle, separate MW/snack area out of prep and cooking zones, retains diagonal corners for symmetry, but could be corner susan and standard uppers Bottom right - shorter island, separate clean-up zone, where someone can be loading or unloading the DW, or setting the table, without interfering with prep and cooking, trash pull-outs under both sinks More kitchen advice: New to Kitchens? Comments (12)In Photo #2 (I should have numbered them, thanks), do you know what the green one is? I'm surprised the two in #3 are the same, however, when looking for a photo of the mom, I found this of the mom and the second one in #3. The ones below are the same mom before it got tired of having babies. I can't imagine the G. ever flowering. It would be fantastic if it ever did. Do you know what I can do to try to get it to grow more? I need to research fertilizer. I don't use much.5. No flowers. Best photo I have is this. I'm afraid it's a goner. I'll look at the roots.
