Why? Do tall people like to have water splash and have wet bellies all the time? Not me. I love the deep sink. If it were just about where the bottom of the sink hits you and remodelfla has it right, then I shouldn't have a sink at all. :-O ;-) I am 5'12" (family ranges from 5'7" to 6'3") and have a 10" deep sink undermounted with 3 cm counters. We do have a grid and we raised our counters a bit (they were supposed to be 2" but I got maybe 1 to 1-1/2), but I think the more important factor is getting a faucet with the proper reach for you sink size and arm length. Think about it -- how often are your hands at the bottom of the sink? How often are you hands reaching into the sink and under the stream of water. Our old faucet was low and set back to where we were bending (in and/or down) to wash anything.

If you have back problems and you've had surgery, then I think a heart-to-heart discussion is needed with your DH (Dear Husband) - unless you will not be using the sink much (e.g., if you have a second sink that you will be using and he'll be using the larger sink). All good points were brought up for you to consider: Be aware that the depth of the sink is another 1" to 1.5" deeper if you have an undermount sink - b/c the sink is attached to the counter from the bottom so you have the additional thickness of the counter material to add to the depth. If you get a deeper sink, consider one that has a sink grid that raises the sink bottom (and raises dishes off the floor of the sink so you can rinse the sink or drain pasta w/o the backwash into the colander.) If you can get one that's split - with one side shallower/higher than the other - that might help you...as long as you don't need to use the deeper side! Seriously consider a farm/apron sink. I'm not sure if they are available in silgranite (which is what I assume you meant). That strip of counter b/w the counter edge and the sink can be a killer! We have a bit more than I would like and it occasionally does bother me - but I'm 5'10" so I have lean over and then reach down farther than you would have to. (We have just shy of 4", I think). Farm/apron sinks have only the thickness of the sink wall for you to lean over. Placement and type of faucet is going to be important. If you have to lean over to reach the faucet, it will bother your back. So, the longer the faucet's reach (toward the front of the sink), the better. Try to place the faucet as close to the front as possible. (I would think a wall-mount faucet would be the worst.) You might think about raising the counters - as long as they aren't too high for you for other work.... If you raise the counters, it would bring the sink up closer to your chest so you wouldn't have to lean over so far. BUT, if you roll out dough or similar, it may not work...OR...have counters at different heights - taller where the sink is; shorter (standard height) elsewhere - maybe even lower than standard elsewhere. In our old house we had the Krauss undermount (loved it!). Now we have the Kohler Stages 45" in our current house (love it more!). The Stages is 10.5" from the bottom of the sink to the top of the granite. There is a grid on the bottom of both these sinks, so that brings it up a bit. The only time I find it tough on the back is when there are a bunch of pots and pans from some special dinner or canning or cooking project. Realistically, those events are tiring all by themselves, so I don't think it's the depth of the sink necessarily. I'd go for it.

Does anyone know of a single-bowl kitchen sink that is full-counter-depth and apron front (like Ikea's Domsjo)? I don't see why they are not popular. The apron front is easier on your back and the full-counter depth saves on the expense of the counter top. I am not picky about the material, but need at least 26" wide, which makes the Domsjo too small.
