but can I replant the ones that snapped apart from each other, or are they a lost cause? If the broken parts show any signs of having growth nubs on them, then you can plant them and the nubs will develop rhizomes that will in time bloom. Also cut away any part of the rhizome that doesn't have any roots on it. Here is a good FAQ from the Iris Forum. How do I dig, divide, and transplant bearded irises? My guess is that they are likely the horrid Star of Bethlehem bulbs...Ornithogalum Umbellatum. Please trust me when I say that it is not something that you want to keep. Please see the thread Identify Please for more discussion, and my warning and mild rant, and pics.

More like 'eternal' than 'perennial' when they're happy. They spread by seed or sharply-pointed runners which will easily go through the bulbs of other more-preferred species. And their older bulbs can go down 12" or more, like a string of beads. Do brilliantly in a sandy/silty soil. Don't mind shade but you'll get more leaves than flowers. Calistoga is not kidding. They're delightful - in someone else's garden.

okay, for irisis this is what i done I planted mine in plasitic crayon containers with cut outs in them you know for the roots to go through and put dirt and everything in and around them, when you first planted your iris they will be fine you really don t have to divided them unitl like the 2 and third year of having them what you do is put the plant up by digging up around it very carfully not to damage the bulbs pull it up divide the bulbs the ones you want oto store put in a brown paper bag and store in a dark cool place like your garage if you have one. then to plant back some bulbs take a mound of dirt in the hole and drape the roots over the mound and be sure to remove the leaves and everything do this only during the fall when they start to go dormant for winter but during the spring u can leave the leave on and cover back up with dirt but if its fall dont plant it too far down or else they will rot! i dont know what to tell you on the others
