I don't know how to dig up bulbs?!?!?!?!?bulb help please!

OK, I know how to dig them up! I don't know how to dry them out to keep and share with people! I also don't know if I should cut irises after they bloom? I have cannas, tiger lillies, and irises that I need to dig up and save. I've looked on here but haven't seen exactly what I need to know. I need to know from cutting them back or letting them die down to how to dry them out and store them. If any one could help I would really appreciate it!!!!

Why do you have to dig them up?
You don't have to cut irises after they bloom. I just leave mine and they do fine. (Just my way of doing it...others have their own ways.)
I know with cannas they have to be lifted in the fall in colder climates, but the other ones are all perenials and survive just fine without lifting.

karri25, I am in also in zone 7. Your lillies and Iris will be just fine left in the ground. The only thing I cut down are the spent blooms and stalks, I leave the foliage.

The cannas are iffy. I do know someone who has a few overwinter but they are in a protected area next to the house. I have to lift mine (learned the hard way)

To lift the cannas I wait until fall when it starts dying back. Remove the leaves and put the tubers in a cardboard boxe and leave them in the shed. They have always done fine. My ex-MIL puts hers in 5 gallon buckets in the shed and hers do fine also. I just always worried that in the buckets they might rot.

If your tulips are diseased you need to find out why. There are tulip disease which will persist and planting more is just throwing good money after bad. The symptom of distorted petals is typically down to poor bulb treatment the previous summer, possibly poor conditions over the winter, and occasionally insect damage. Diseases, other than tulip breaking virus, tends to affect the leaves quite badly. Lifting tulip bulbs over the summer is indeed a good thing to do if your climate and suitable are not ideal. Tulip bulbs in heavy soils can receive too much water over the summer which will cause them to be weak the following year. Or they may split excessively and never become large enough to flower. Hot humid climates seem to cause the same problems. You might want to leave some in the ground and lift others, just to see how well they do in your garden. If you are going to dig them at all then dig them now, or as soon as the leaves go yellow, and store them cool and dry over the summer. Replant them in November, or maybe October, once the soil has cooled down but before it freezes solid. You can plant annuals in the same area but it isn't ideal for the tulips. Some people deliberately overplant to hide the dying foliage. This is bad because the foliage needs maximum sunlight to recharge for next year. Beds with annuals also tend to get watered quite a lot over the summer, again not good for the tulips. These are two of the reasons why tulips often repeat poorly. If you are going to leave the bulbs in the ground and overplant, think about doing it fairly late to give the leaves as much sun as possible, and think about using plants that don't need extra water and fertiliser, like Cosmos or Iceplants.

I am with Laceyvail - don't use weedcloth in a garden! If you google weedcloth on many of the forums, you'll see lots of opinions that agree with this. Roots of woody plants from below and weed seeds that have blown in from above will root into the fabric and you will come to regret putting it in. It keeps mulch separated from the soil, so the soil doesn't get new organic matter and as the mulch breaks down and organic matter blows in you have new growing medium on top of the landscape fabric. It's an all around bad idea and the nightmare is when you decide to get rid of it . . . DH did this once many years ago and it both didn't work and was misery to remove a couple of years later. It does have its uses - to keep drainage material from washing out from behind a dry-stacked stone retaining wall, to keep soil in a basket where you want to plant annuals, or under a walkway to separate layers of soil and drainage material, but you will come to regret ever using it where there are plants growing in a garden. Instead of using landscape fabric, I mow down everything to ground level and sometimes will dig a few weeds that I know to be stubborn, put down heavy cardboard and then a heavy layer of medium fine mulch on top of that to a depth that settles to about 3 inches. That's enough to prevent most weeds from sprouting and to keep most of the already present weedy plants from coming up through. I let that sit for a few weeks to a year and then plant. If you are in a hurry to plant, though I can't imagine that this is a great time to plant in most areas of Colorado right now, you can use some type of contact weed killer (they range from gas flame weed torches to strong vinegar to Roundup.) One more quick comment - since you are planning to redo the whole area, now would be a perfect time to add any soil supplements like more organic matter to help hold moisture and nutrients.

Mulch the heck out of them if you must keep them in the ground and pray for a mild winter. Otherwise, bite the bullet, dig them up, and, if it's going to freeze, then take the time to bring them into a protected environment until the cold passes. It wouldn't help during a power outage unless you went to the extreme of delegating a generator for the cause, but the ThermoCube available at Home Depot or online is a wonderful gadget for preventing freeze in one's tuber storage area. A space heater plugged into one of those in an outlet in an enclosed area and you're almost guaranteed to prevent loss from freezing. I got lucky with stored tubers during our 6+ day power outage and icy cold a couple winters ago, but every clump I left in the ground last year (duplicates or didn't-cares) was rotted to pulp this spring. I would dig up anything you don't want to repurchase and experiment leaving those you don't care so much about in the ground with a heavy mulch of leaves or straw. Good luck. I'm waiting on the first frost of the year, either tonight or over the weekend and then it will be time to get the autumn digging underway. Ick.

restrain the dogs to a specific enclosed area? like a kennel or run. OR put up fencing around your beds OR remove the dogs from the area. OR put the dogs on anchored leads in the yard out of reach from the beds. OR get some device for training them and sit out there waiting for them to dig and then deploy the training device (loud noise, loud verbal commands, water blasts, shock collars). Dogs can be trained not to do this type of behavior but it takes time and real effort on all parties parts. I recently saw an episode on "it's me or the dog" on animal plantet where the lady trained dogs not to eat their own and the other family dog members pooh. She reinforced them with treats when they obeyed a command to "leave it" which was by using little flags in the yard. She'd place the flags at the pooh site and then command "leave it" when they left it alone, they got a treat. She started out just using the flags other places with the dogs, so that they would understand what they were being trained to "leave" which was the flag association. then it became related to the pooh as well.

for irisis this is what i done I planted mine in plasitic crayon containers with cut outs in them you know for the roots to go through and put dirt and everything in and around them, when you first planted your iris they will be fine you really don
t have to divided them unitl like the 2 and third year of having them what you do is put the plant up by digging up around it very carfully not to damage the bulbs pull it up divide the bulbs the ones you want oto store put in a brown paper bag and store in a dark cool place like your garage if you have one. then to plant back some bulbs take a mound of dirt in the hole and drape the roots over the mound and be sure to remove the leaves and everything do this only during the fall when they start to go dormant for winter but during the spring u can leave the leave on and cover back up with dirt but if its fall dont plant it too far down or else they will rot! i dont know what to tell you on the others
