Landscape design/garden design
Comments (34)karni - I have spoken to the neighbors, kind of a long story, we'll see if something happens. They are very very nice people but have a very very busy lifestyle. They shouldn't have such an elaborate perennial garden on such a small lot if they aren't in a position to maintain it closely. I didn't get the impression that they were willing to "give up" anything. They seemed like people who "want it all" even if they can't "take care of it all". Think I will add something else: DON'T set up an elaborate abundant garden unless you have time to maintain it or pay to have someone maintain it for you regularly (biweekly). You don't have to fill every nook and cranny of your yard. Remember landscaping the "emptiness" is important too. Need the diversity of plants AND "space" for a really beautiful garden IMO....See MoreHow to choose a landscape designer?
Comments (8)First of all, you can expect to pay anywhere from $100 for a landscape design and drawing on up. It really does depend on the designer, their skill, reputation, education etc. So it is difficult to give you a monetary amount. Basically, pay what you can. 2nd, a good way to find someone is go on the local, or botanical garden tours. You can check out many styles of sun/shade gardening and get an idea of who's work you liked. AND you can often speak to the owner and gardener of the home. Yes, the designer you choose should be willing to encorporate existing plant material. Although they are being the creative mind for you, keep in mind that you are in control of the cash so you are the boss. They should give you a reason why they can't re-use the materials if they don't use them (eg. for a sunnier yard). The design can be done at any time of the year. Personally, I would recommend not going to a nursery and just choosing a designer they select. Lately I have heard many complaints about designers that are "chosen" this way. Really, they are chosen for you, and not you choosing them. Now, if the nursery has more than one design affiliate (so you can interview more than one and it be your choice), or if their house designer has an excellent reputation then I think it's a safe bet. I would make sure to ask the designer about their background. Ask to see photographs or drive by homes that they have designed, and ask if they have EVER TURNED DOWN A JOB and ask why. Lastly, check out the http://www.gnps.org/ Georgia Native Plant Society Web page. You can contact someone through their pages. The reason I suggest them is a) there are several good woodland and shade landscape designers affiliated with this group, and b) many native plants of our region are found in woodland areas so whomever is affiliated is a woodland garden designer. Comments (5)Can you check with your school about what the local laws and practices are? Do you need a business license? Do you need a license to call yourself a designer in your state/locality? Some do. Does the school have any policies about students doing work for pay? Do they have guidelines? In general, anyone can call herself a "consultant" and consult on just about anything and charge any amount for it, so long as it isn't a specifically regulated field (e.g., medicine) and you declare the income and follow other laws. As a design student, however, you're trying to build a specific reputation in the place where you live, so you need to be really careful about protecting that. Rhome gave you some very good advice. Tell your client up front that you're a student but that you've done a lot of work and learning the particulars of kitchens outside of your coursework, and sign a paper with them that says that if you design for them that you'll be able to come take pictures during and after their reno for use in your portfolio....See MoreHow much does a designer normally charge for full house remodel
Comments (2)This can only be answered by you getting some quotes your needs are too vague . Moving a wall or 2 is not enough info even to get a proper quote for that item. Get on the phone and call some designers in your area that is the first step....See MoreYardvaark
