I do know of a couple that is going.

While I am a motorcycle rider, I don't participate in large groups like that. I know several people who have said they were going but don't know if their plans changed. It's a beautiful area to visit and I plan on doing so away from any organized events.

I've also heard Sturgis is quite an event and is on many motorcycle rider's bucket list. Daytona and Sturgis.

I know two people from our area dees, and they both said it was a really lllllooooonnnngggg ride (1284 from me, probably more like 1220ish for you). I can't imagine riding a bike that far. 2500 in a car was hard enough! Your way of visiting is how I hit New Orleans. I love it there, being able to linger in the Café Du Monde, for instance, which is nigh impossible during Mardi Gras.

It is a long ride....I can do 1,000+ miles on a bike.....just not in one day! My neighbor took 7 days to hit the Black Hills area and back. Said it was wonderful. My BIL and a friend did it in 4. Just depends on how much you want to get done.

No doubt it's beautiful, but I do remember hearing lots about sore rears ;)

I do hit Hollister every year because it's not far and a good way to reunite with old friends.

Don't ride any more but I do miss the runs of the old days. Those days you didn't have promoters running things. You called up a few friends, grabbed a sleeping bag and a change of clothes and jammed. Slept whereever you landed. Once in a while you would ride to events that were non motorcycle but ended up drawing quite a few from all over like the Frog Jumps. Great parties, meet new people, sleep under the stars. Loved it.

Husband and son will hit the end of it. They are trailer-ing the bikes most of the way...Their one and only time. DH had an accident on his bike earlier this summer. Totaled it. Had to borrow the bike he will take--he didn't want to lose his camp site deposit. It will be his last ride--and I can't say I am sorry!!

We haven't ridden any long rides in quite some time. About 6 or 7 years ago DH and I rode to visit my brother and his family near Atlanta, from south central PA. About 700 miles one way. I had a cushion for my butt! haha Actually, and this surprised me, my hips and knees hurt more than my butt. I won't ride that far again, guess I'm showing my age, or sissy-ness.

DH rode alone from our place to near Steamboat Springs, CO to go elk hunting one year. What an adventure. He had a collapsible tent cot that he would put up along the road wherever he stopped for the night. It was his greatest adventure, I was worried sick the whole time. We did everything we could think of to make it as safe as possible.

We got him a SPOT and activated it, paid for the additional insurance on it, got road side assistance on our cycle ins. policy, which he actually had to use, in the wilderness! No elk that year, but he had great stories.

I recall Sturgis events. We've had occasions to drive across Minnesota and into South Dakota on our way the Rockies and beyond. A couple of vacations coincided with the Sturgis event. The east-west roads are filled with motorcyclists. They look happy in the morning, but by afternoon, they become a tired bunch. One year, we were crossing Minnesota on the interstate keeping our speed at the limit plus a mile or two over. A group of riders passed us like as thought we wre laggards. Two mintes later, I see flashing lights ahead. The speed Cops have them pulled over and is passing out tickets. We continue and 15 minutes later the same bunch catches us and passes. We are nearing the state line with South Dakota. When we approach the state line, the South Dakota police had been waiting for them. They were passing out tickets from SD to the same bunch. We arrive in time to see one rider rip off his leather jacket, throw it on the ground and stomp on it. The fellow riding a hard-tail Harley was laying on the ditch bank resting his back and rubbing sore mussels.

Later after taking a drive through the Bad Lands, we go to Wall, SD. We have to stop at Wall Drugs for glass of ice water and ice cream. Its a tourist event worth seeing. Wall Drug is several buildings strung together with each building having a different theme of stuff to buy and is a mini-museum. The town is full or motorcycles. I've never seen so many in one place. Main street in Wall, SD, is wide with angle parking in the center of the street The center of the street was filled with cycles from one end of town to the other!

Only one other event matched Strugis and that was the Harley anniversary in Milwaukee, WI. The organizers planned a method of handling the huge flow of cycle traffic spearing into the city on the morning of the event. They designated staging areas in outlying locations. Riders were formed into groups or not more than 20 cycles each. A traffic manager spaced the release of each group. My house was about 5 miles from one of these staging points. I rode my cycle to the staging area to see what it was all about and to feel the flavor of enthusiasm. It was sight to behold. Some bikes were decorated with things of personal nature or indicative or where the bike came from. A number of license plates were from Canada. One was from the Yukon.
