Black patches on my Orchids, please help?

Hi,

I was peeling off some of my Laelia Cattleya sheaths cleaning them up a bit & discovered a really bad black patch with little holes, I've attached some photos, is it fungi or bacteria? & what is the best way to stop & heal it?

It is scar tissue probably caused by a fungus. Once there those marks will not go away. Cold

and damp conditions without enough air movement encourage the fungi or bacteria (I am not sure which) to strike.

You could try cleaning your plants with eco oil as a preventative and make sure there is enough air movement around the pots.

Ok great will do thanks! Just spoke to the nursery I bought it from & they suspect it to be caused from a moth that lays it's eggs & then the little holes are caused by the maggots escaping. Once there's holes the cycle is over & the black lesion should dry up? Will see...

Good evening. In my opinion this is normal for a phal. If your saying ou had this plant for about three months, and depending on conditions of your home; flowers can last as little as one month to 6 months. Now please remember this is just personal opinion. I've benn growing phal orchids for about 8 years. I have around 10 phal orchids myself. I've tried many other types and have not had any luck. Just because the flowers are dying doesn't mean the plant is dying. It's just the spike is dying for the season and as long as you take good care ofte plant, a new spike will for next year or perhaps in the fall depending on your growing conditions.

Be very careful with watering (not too much!) I got 2 healthy, rooted cuttings on E Bay, nice and green. I planted them then watered them. Shortly after that I noticed some black spots the size of peas in different places. I'm sure it was because of the water (probably too much). I stopped watering them, it's been about a month and the black spots seem to have scabbed over and dried up. It is from rot, and like Cactuscharris said, you may have to cut it off if it starts to spread. Good luck!

If you have scale you have ants. Ants farm the scale. They bring it to the plant and eat the secretions. Systemic poison like orthene helps. Work on getting rid of the ants.

The house has ants. We've had them in various rooms over the years. Seems we get rid of them in one room and they return in a different room. I followed the trail from the infested pot to the glass deck door where my setup is. Some of the plants were outside but have been inside since October and that particular phal has never been outside. In this case I believe my house gave my plant ants! I've had bait out for a month but I think I have to change brands. I was about to use orthene but the smell was too noxious for me so I sprayed with orange guard. The ants moved to a different pot! Grrr

Yeah it was definitely caused by a little moth that layer it's lava in there, ended up cutting the patch open & found 3 grubs (maggots) in there, cleaned it all out & seems to be doing ok, just has a big chunk missing / scar that's drying out.
