Space above kitchen window...

Now that the main layout is settled on (thanks GW!) for our upcoming kitchen reno, I'm trying to sort out some of the details. Detail #1 pertains to what I should do with the space above one of my windows. You'll see in the images I've attached that there is a shelf/cabinet to the far left, which is where the microwave will reside. Below that there will be a round prep sink in the corner.

The issue I'm trying to grapple with is what to do with the space above the adjacent window. You'll notice in the second picture that there's 2 windows on that wall, the one to the right more or less goes to the ceiling. I'm wondering if it will look odd to have the empty space above the window on the left or not. I can't do much, as I can't block the cabinet door on the left, though I had debated at one point not having a door there and custom building a shelf across the top of the window and into the corner.

Thoughts?

I am not sure there is a real formula at this point with taller rooms being more prevalent. If the ceiling is 9' and the window is effectively 5', 2' from the top of the ceiling and 2.5' off of the floor sounds about right

If light and heat control are not an issue hang the drapes from just above the top windows and IMO those drapes need to be at least 2x fullness with a rod tht runs all across the wondows and look like they could actually be closed even if you never do it. IMO the silliest thing ever is 2 short rods with panels it always looks cheap. What is the flooring? The reason I ask is if it is wood you need sun control or the floors will get bleached anf if vinyl some of them can'y handle a lot of sun.

Kitchen window above sink sits too high above floor. Does it look bad?

Ours are 51" above the floor. I love it (though didn't choose it--both the windows and the sink location are original to the century-old house). This is, I think, 3.5" trim on the bottom of the windows. It's the perfect height to look out the window while standing at the sink (at least if you are my height!)

IMO no need for pendant above the sink and those are like you tried to match and missed. I woudl however tell you to have all the bulbs in all the fixtures and pot lights to be the same I like LED 4000K but 3500K can work but all the same . Edison type buls are horrible for lighting everywhere there is a reason they disappeared .

If your microwave is on that shelf, will you be able to open it? I'm having a hard time seeing how you can reach in to pull stuff out, assuming the mw hinge is on the left and the control panel is on the right (not sure if they make MWs in a reverse configuration). Could you swap it with the double door cabinet right next to it? That way it will be partially hidden from view next to the fridge -- out of site from the casual kitchen observer.

As for the window, if you included a few inches of filler to the corner, you could likely do a simple, short valance across the ceiling over both windows to make their heights look as if they are the same. Not sure how you feel about fabric up there, or if it will get gunky...

Also, did you consider doing just a free-standing hood instead of the cabinetry run above the stove?

Can you alter the windows to be the same height?

To equalise them, use a roman shade mounted at the same height for both

You could add a sconce over the window. And michey has a good ? About the microwave.

michey1st_gw: good call on the MW positioning. For whatever reason I never thought that through. I think I'll do a bit of tweaking and drop it under cabinet on the island then (I want to keep the one cabinet beside the fridge as that will be my beverage centre, which makes more sense beside the fridge).

I did consider doing a freestanding hood, but I really want the cabinets there for things like cooking oils, spices etc.

I thought of outright replacing the window, but it's pretty new so I'd rather not. The valence and roman blinds ideas are possibilities though. I guess the downside to them is that I essentially cut off part of the larger window by doing so.
