Hi Elfinn, That's why it's bad to tug on the plant (even if gently) to see if it's rooted. It breaks those tiny little roots that we are trying to encourage it to grow in the first place. (I'll keep repeating this but), the best, surest & safest way to know if your plant has rooted is to wait to see new growth on top. I've grown ZZs from leaves several times. Just using the actual leaf, which one puts down in mix & then leaves in bright, indirect light. I give it a small drink of water every other month or so. I've also grown them from an entire shoot, including the fat, bulbous bottom stem of the shoot. Pls. be forwarned, this has taken over a year the 3 times I've done it. Also, pls. note that even if the leaf (above the mix) shrivels, dries & appears dead, do not pull it out, because it likely has already started growing the tuber below the soil mix where one can't see it. I root many things in water (Hoyas, Episcias, Begonias, Polycias), but not succulents nor ZZ plants; they're too likely to rot in water (I know some folks do it, but in my experience they've rotted in water). This is not an exercise for the impatient.

Haven't done so, but pls. be forewarned. Doing from a single leaf often takes a year to happen, I've done it 4 or 5 times now & it can take that long, w/out doubt. Pls. be sure not to tug & pull at it to check for rooting. Especially true when the leaf shrivels & dries out, looking dead. There is often a small tuber developing underground which then anchors the first leaf when that happens. Just so you know! (Learned this the hard way)

I just repotted my ZZ Plant today! After having this on my wish list for a while, I got it from one of the shops at the Philadelphia Flower Show a few weeks ago. Unfortunately when I was cleaning off the roots I found a lot of either dead or rotted roots. I was able to save a few good stalks but some had to be removed completely due to the extent of rot. Will roots grow on the stem cuttings? I just stuck them into the mix kind of like I was making a flower arrangement. I'm not planning on watering for a while so what roots were left can recover. I know these are typically slow growers but I do have it in a particularly sunny window. Here it is after the repot. -Erica

I'm looking for seeds from these two plants: chlorophytum comosum (Spider plant), full green leave variety. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chlorophytum_comosum Zamioculcas zamiifolia (ZZ plant), https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zamioculcas. These two common house plants are too easy to propagate from cuttings. For this reason it is very rare to find vendor that sells their seeds. I exclusively grow plants from seeds so please if you have them please let me know Thank you.
