We have a similar front door. How bad is yours? Can it be repaired and repainted? I'm guessing that's an orginal door in an old house?

I don't think it's original to our 100 yr old home but put in sometime maybe in the last 20 yrs. As you can see in the pic, the center square part of the wood has sucked up moisture and gotten bigger and is popping out a little. It can be repaired by my contractor but he said I'll have to put polyurethane every 6 months. I'm looking to see if I can get a maintenance-free replacement (maybe fiberglass) of a similar shape for maybe $2000 instead of paying much more with the local stores I've visited

I'm not much help with a replacement. Ours is original to our 1926 house and is wood with a wood finish in the outside. Our GC (various indoor projects) has mentioned before that replacing our front door would require a custom door and it would be pricey (our door is fine, but people have done annoying things with the locks and such that we can't undo). We have not needed to refinish our door in the two and a half years we have lived here and I do not foresee needing to refinish it in the near future. Yours does appear to be more exposed to the elements though.

If you live in a neighborhood of old houses, many of them may have non-standard size doors. You might try asking your neighbors if they know of any sources for replacement doors. I guess your contractor didn't have any suggestions? I wonder if someone on the old house forum here might have a source to suggest?

Where are you located? Is your house Tudor?

It is a tudor with exterior of stucco. A custom door is going to cost me $2500 but I think my contractor can create a new door for half of that. My question is - with the factory pre-done finish, would it tend to be more maintenance-free than what the contractor can do? Also, with my current door being wood, how often would I have to apply polyurethane?
