coyote and Inky-proofing the south gate....

There are now 5 coyotes in the neighbourhood - mother, father, and three young ones born this spring. They casually wander around the neighbourhood during the day and lounge on a grassy field across from an elementary school/beside a daycare facility. We weren't too worried when it was just one in the neighbourhood, but the idea of 5 hunting as a pack, especially once they've reduced the local rabbit and squirrel populations as bit more, is a bit intimidating! Inky, the big Collie mix, that has been visiting a lot over the last year has decided the relatively low (39") south gate is just a fun hurdle on her personal Agility course in the back yard! If Inky can easily jump out, the coyotes can easily jump in! (Our dog, Cole, now gets an escort by DH when he goes out for bed-time busy-busy.) So we decided to build an insert, using copper pipes like we did in the north alley, to prevent anything jumping in or out.... We installed it this afternoon. It didn't change the appearance of the gate much. We had to cut clematis (and other things) back to install the insert, so there will shortly be a lot of dead clematis hanging over the gate :-) The old, bottom, section of the gate desperately needs a thorough washing as it's heavily mossy-green :-)
