Can't upload pics at Houzz. Flash? Java?

I use Google Chrome.

I'm not so savvy with computers. I've seen the headlines about Flash over the past week or so. A few days ago, it looked like, to my naive computer brain that some serious downloading and updating was going on with, I'm guessing, the Flash problem.

I figured at the same time that it might be a good time for me to ask Java to update.

I really have very little understanding of what those do.

But, within that same time frame, more or less, I'm not able upload pics to Houzz.

I do the usual clicking of the Photo Icon and browse to the pic and click open... just like always, but now, I get BACK to my computer a file labeled "createTempPhoto" which I'm asked to save. I've tried permutations of saving, not saving, try to open, etc. The file itself seems to be 0 bytes and empty. My system can't open it.

Meanwhile the little uploading circular thingee which usually indicates the pic is uploading is going round and round and round for what looks like an eternity.

What's going on?

Can you upload photos to facebook, or photobucket ? Is this the only site that the error occurs on ?

The problem seems to be permeating other Houzz forums, as well. Sit tight. It may have nothing to do with your particular system.

As an aside...but perhaps related to this Houzz experience...CVS Pharmacies customer photo program was recently visited by an welcomed "guest" and they were forced to shut their entire photo system program down yesterday. They didn't broadcast much info about the issue so currently, I can't relate much more than this but I'd wait a while before you decide to putter around with your own system.

heck I would just quit using photobucket and start using one of the many many other free sites that are better than photobucket and have no limits. If you have pics already on then then use your daughters pc to move them from photobucket to the other hosting site. ok just noticed in all of this you have not told us what browser you are using to try to access you photobucket account, if you do not have firefox go get firefox and try it using that browser and see if you can do it that way. Let us know what browser you are using, the photobucket site may have somehow got put in your restricted list on the browser, we have to know which one to tell you how to look. Get firefox. super easy to do just download it and follow the install wizard, when it ask if you want to import your settings and bookmarks from IE say yes to all of that, you do not have to make it the default browser, the first time you open firefox it will take you to the firefox home page to let you know it downloaded properly, after that it will open to what ever was your home page on IE. Just a thought do you have all of your flash updated? I mentioned to you in the other thread you have on here about using the secunia tool to make sure you have everything else on your pc up to date since you said you had not updated java in years, if you have not updated flash and other stuff you can have problems and it makes you wide open to infections, go run that scan and make sure you have everything up to date!! and I would definitely run a malwarebytes free scan too, I gave you that info on the other thread also. When I started using Houzz I was amazed at how accurate the results of my searches were (in addition to the size of the photos database). It was a great resource. More recently when I've prepared to undertake projects, I've noticed that I just don't get the same, accurate results. My searches are riddled with results that just aren't pertinent. I think this is due to the incorporation of advertisers from my city and surrounding areas (contractors, builders, and others). There are enough ads (or results that are somehow influenced by someone who has something to sell) now to really hinder the flow of design ideas. I guess many internet sites end up using advertisers but it morphs the user experience. It's really made using Houzz less fruitful.

Now that you know how to do it, be judicious in applying it. When you do it, you're stealing bandwidth. Most commercial sites have plenty of bandwidth and since you're advertising their wares, they're okay with you appropriating the image (which is technically a copyright violation whether you put it in your Photobucket account or not). Photobucket is setup specifically for sharing, so linking something from a public Photobucket account, or your own, is what they're there for. Nowadays, Photobucket also allow you to save an image from the web in one step, rather than having to save it locally and then upload it back to the web. Sometimes people will post an image from a small time page and the owner will trace it back here wondering what all the hits were about. Every time the thread with the image gets opened, the originating website registers a hit. These are people who get very touchy if we're criticising them (including criticising them for appropriating images from one of us!), though sometimes they're happy to have us discussing them and wish we'd actually click over to their sites. I used to make my images clickable so they'd take you to the Amazon page, or whatever, where it could be found, but since Photobucket, among others, insert a link to their home page in your picture code, I stopped bothering because people would think it would just take them there, and I wasn't about to bother with a tooltip.

TY, Emily. I was able to change my cover & profile photos a minute ago w/o problems. Playing with uploading into a thread just now, the pic uploaded but I was typing when it finished & when I hit the backspace key, it erased the pic even though my cursor wasn't near the pic. I uploaded it again, while typing, and the pic showed up where my cursor was when I started the upload. Added another pic to the discussion while not typing but it never showed up, the green circle disappeared several times, both while not typing on that window (just watching the green circle,) and while typing in another window while it was uploading. I tried it 5 times while just watching the green circle, not clicking or typing anything after selecting the pic. Every time, the green circle spun for about 15 secs, then disappeared.

I just now was able to upload to Photobucket.

I think I saw that someone else had posted a photo at Houzz so I assumed it was just me. Can YOU post a photo?

Do you know if it's the case that Java or Flash is involved in uploading photos to this site?

Thanks, that's very helpful. I was not looking forward to trying to sort that out. I'll try some other ideas.

Similar problem for me. After several unsuccessful attempts, I got a pic to upload here, but it still screwed up my accompanying text. Like mentioned above, Java or flash shouldn't be a cause for this particular issue -- seems like a houzz problem...

It's erratic, and it's more likely to work if you upload FIRST and then write about the picture.

For me, it's not at all erratic. I've tried all sorts of permutations and nothing works.

And, before now, I NEVER had a problem.

I sent an email to HOUZZ and they asked me to clear my history, cache and cookies. I use CCleaner and will periodically clear all that, usually leaving cookies like Houzz and yahoo for example. So, this time when I used CCleaner, I made a point of asking that the Houzz and Gardenweb cookies be deleted. (Houzz does not make it easy to log back in, but I finally figured that out.) They asked my browser. Google Chrome.

Nothing changed. Same problem.

What's somewhat interesting is that I can upload to my "Ideabook" at Houzz, then click the "Houzz Photo" link and will be offered the chance to select from pictures in my "Ideabook".

I've taken pictures in the winter through my bedroom window as the birds come for the food scraps I throw out for them. I was big into peas at the time.

Life is suddenly back to normal.

I've taken no additional steps and I don't think Houzz has done anything, but suddenly things appear to be back to normal.

Houzz, meanwhile, had sent me an email and in one sentence said words to the effect that Flash or Java could have something to do with my problem. Just that simple kind of sentence which really doesn't say much, I don't think, but I'll pass it along to you.

They then asked me for a screenshot of the problem.

I told them that things are appearing to be back to normal.

My guess would have been that the Houzz server was temporarily misconfigured but I'm not an expert.

I spoke too soon. Sorta.

It was working last night. It was not working this morning. It's working now.

I let the Houzz people know about this thread.

It's looking more and more like things are back to normal for me.

When I had last emailed Houzz, I told them that I'd also had a problem yesterday morning in writing to a thread, hitting submit and having my post simply disappear. The thread would pop back up but my comment was no where to be seen. The comments never showed up.

Houzz, in reply, said that they could explain that because of some technical glitch they were having at that time.

Not at all to suggest that is what caused my problem.

I may not be back to this thread. Thanks for all your help.

May have figured out the issue. Raw dig camera pics are pretty big -- mine are ~2.5 MB. Houzz choked. But if I resize those down to a smaller size (ended up ~800 kB), Houzz uploaded those quickly....

Just wandered back in for a check.

It's not the size for me. For sure.

The largest of the bird pics that I've posted is around 200 Kb. I think one is only about 30 Kb.

Same size as these in the Test forum

After the last time I was here, I tried to upload a small picture somewhere and it did the same routine I'd get when it wasn't working. I waited five minutes and did the exact same thing and there was no problem.

It seems to be working now.

Let's see.....

Whoops, spoke too soon. It's erratic. The pic I just failed with is less than 50 Kb.

So, I immediately head over to the Test Forum link I posted just above and immediately tested to see if I could upload.

No problem.

Go to a forum I normally might post on.

I agree, not size. That image was 9.9MB (10.3 MiB).

Houzz was limiting uploads to 200KB but sometime recently they started resizing them.
