Alright so I only have figured out how to post photos in reply so here goes, I hope this helps more. The OP photo is taken today, I open that window to let the sun shine on it on sunny afternoons but it's only a south facing window and it's somewhat filtered because it's going through a screen, so I try to gently take it out to get direct sun occasionally on mild mornings or early evenings. This photo below is what it looked like the day it arrived at my house, as you can see it had some brown needles from day 1, but I didn't consider that a problem, I didn't consider they would have sent me a plant that was already sick.

Great advice here! Thank you to the experts! I have the browning needles problem with a green mound juniper I received for Christmas. It's from bonzaioutlet.com. It appears to be in dirt with little green balls on top. It's wired into the pot so I can't get it out to check what's on the bottom unless I cut the wire. It's in a humidity tray with stones and I mist it daily. It's in a sunny south facing window. I have a feeling from reading this thread that I am over-watering it so I threw out the stones (gonna get new ones) and fertilized it with the stuff (fish based) it came with. It has some new growth so I think it's able to be saved.... tell me what I should do? Thanks you guys! I live in Virginia in an apartment so I can't plant it outside.

Oh dear... make yourself a promise first, to never go by tags stuck on plants because they're usually one size fits all, which means your tree's tag applied to lots of trees but not yours! Junipers do NOT like getting watered often at all, and submersion for 2 days drowned it. When junipers get hard and break off, they're gone... but it may have been on its way long before you came along anyway as they go on looking green for ages after death. Next time you think a bonsai is cute, come here or to books, etc. first and find out if you have the right growing conditions for that tree, and what you need to do from the day it goes home with you. As far as bugs go, Safer's Insecticidal Soap Spray may have helped, but you can't know that for sure now. And don't fuss because we've all been there many times - it takes a while before you know what to do.

The brown dead growth on the inside is most likely from lack of light. if they are completely dead i would recommend removing them. This will allow for better air circulation in the tree and could possibly encourage back budding in that area. As far as soil mixture it depends on where you are located as local weather patterns will cause the soil to stay wet for a different time frame. Example would be that a mixture used in Florida, if used in Wisconsin will kill the tree as it will stay wet too long. That being said I think the mixture stated will work out alright for you, I'm going on what works in my area and your yearly weather probably is about the same as mine. The soil its in now is probably inadequate as is most soil trees from low grade nurseries and flower order sites have their Bonsai tree's in. Make sure the soil isn't watered too often (only watered when the soil is almost completely dry, But NOT completely). The soil should only stay wet for 3 days at most before having to be watered again or it is retaining too much water. Also keep in mid this tree will have to kept outdoors during winter or it will eventually weaken and die. I recommend going to your local library and reading up on as many Bonsai books there as possible. That should help clear up a lot for you.
