Need help with my Granddaughter's Pumpkin --- lol

When my 7-year-old granddaughter finished school a month ago (mid-June), she brought home a tiny pumpkin plant in a styrofoam cup (so much for teaching them about recycling). The plant was about 1" tall but I figured if it grows into a pumpkin it should be in a big pot. So, I planted it in an 18" x 18" clay pot. Then I read about them and realized I may have made a mistake!!! I dug a hole and set the pot in the ground. The plant is now about 6' long, flowering, sending out tendrils and generally acting like Little House of Horrors. Will it survive in that size pot and produce pumpkin(s) of any size. I'm watering and feeding it all the time. Just as an added incentive for a good answer ... read my granddaughter's note to her plant ... Thanks!!
