Wood floor, counters and cabinets. Too much wood?
Comments (8)I think it MAY be a lot of wood, but it also could be very pretty. One little concern I had though. You mentioned that this was a "green" remodel. I don't know if you are aware of it, but not all Tigerwood is harvested in an environmentally friendly way. It is from Brazil, and much of it is stripped from the rain forests. Attached is a link that explains more about it and how you can insure that the wood you are buying was not taken from old-growth rain forests. Tigerwood is being farmed for harvest, but it is second-growth and not old-growth. Some companies are responsible, but unfortunatly most are not. Please don't take this as criticism because that is really not how I meant it. I just wanted to inform you, in case you didn't know. Tigerwood is not usually a very green product. Comments (25)Gowelch asked me to post these for her. Here they are! Click on each thumbnail to enlarge. Gowelch, the first photo...was, like "Wow, I've never seen mineral streaks like that before". And I would say that that one is the worst...and as a business owner, if it bothered you that much, I would replace it for you. On the other hand, it would not bother me at all...in fact, it looks interesting. Now, real question is...is this typical for a semi-custom manufacturer. I do have one in my showroom that is similar (or a bit more streaking) to the one in the third photo...so I would have to say yes. It's typical. Look at it this way...at least you know it's solid wood :-) I think it's also good to point out that stock and semi-custom are usually standard with lots of vinyl and laminate. When you upgrade with stock and semi-custom cabinets, your more likely to see more 'unclear' woods and veneers...as opposed to a custom line. For instance, my custom cherry kitchen has almost no sapwood....yet, if it was in KraftMaid or Medallion...I would definitely have it. I think this is the same thing going on with your interior rollouts. Hope this helps. Kompy...See MoreHelp! Cabinet door color variations- Pics
Comments (15)I have been learning all about "end grain" from my cabinet maker! Google it and you will understand better why that looks like that. It is where the wood is cut on an angle and the grain is more open, so it sucks up stain like little straws. There's problably someone that does wood working that can answer this better than I have...I didn't like it either on my raised panel doors. (The only way you can get away from it is to have a recessed panel door with mitered corners.) Anyway, my cabinet maker is going to put a little sealer(?) on first before staining, so it won't soak up so much stain. This happens alot with maple end grain and using a darker stain like the med. cherry he's using on mine. Mine looked worse than yours because it wasn't just on the corners like that, but all the way across the raised panel end. BTW--I think yours look fine-and normal...See More? about complementing paint colors (mirror/red cabinet--too much
