? about complementing paint colors (mirror/red cabinet--too much

As of now--as you'll see in the picture which isn't all that clear--we have a big red mirror on the wall (the wall is gray--it is not clear in this picture). The wall is actually too dark, so it's on our to-do list in terms of repainting.

For some reason, our living room contains mostly brown stuff (we live in an open concept condo). I don't like this and I'm trying to lighten things up by adding pillows, vases, changing the carpet to wood, etc.

for now, I can do little things. I want to paint the cabinet in the second picture. It's an oriental type cabinet and as you can see, it's dominant color is brown (again!).

I thought about painting it red to match the mirror, but is that too matchy-matchy? I was going to try and use chalk paint. Or, should I go with something to offset the red like yellow or sage?

Thank you.
