Growing Tomatoes

Black spots on tomatoes but foliage appears to be fine.

I had two plants that had what appeared to be Septoria. I removed all the leaves, lower branches, and isolated those plants from the rest of the crop. I now have some black dots on tomatoes that are growing, they are black cherry tomato plants. Can septoria affect the fruit only or at all?

Ugh, that is not good. I just looked it up. Seems like it could destroy my entire crop of tomatoes!

I have the Bonide Copper Fungicide and will start that later today.

Over on the Tomato Pest & Diseases forum you'll find a long post called Problem Solver 2. Just use the forum search for that form if it isn't still on the front page. It is filled with links to images of the different tomato diseases. Browse them and see if you can find a pic that matches your problems. Off hand it sounds like you have a fungus problem (the black spots) from your description but I can't be sure without seeing it or a great many more details. If that is the case then spraying with an anti-fungus spray such as Daconil (sold under several different names) will help control it. The purpleing leaves and veins are due to stress - normal for a stressed plants - and will disappear once you ID the other problem and treat it. Good luck. Without a picture it's very hard to determine what's going on and what disease might be present b'c there are several diseases that can result with black spots on the fruits. Do you see any spots on the foliage? If so can you please describe them as to size and color and shape and whether they have yellow halos around them. Could you post a picture of some of the tomatoes please? It would help a great deal. From your description it could be several different things and we could only guess at the cause. Are there any signs of pests? Stinkbugs? Fruitworms? How do the plants themselves look? Any signs of disease? Dave

Copper fungicide is PREVENTIVE !
It might be too late for the disease.
But still, spray, maybe you are lucky.

Most of us here spray fungicide, from DAY ONE of planting.

Wow, that is a great link, thanks! It appears that it is exactly what I have :( The spots have been there for about two weeks I guess. They never got bigger or changed. I did have some septoria leaf, I think anyway, and thought it was that. I pruned the heck out of the plant that had it and the new growth seems to be void of any trace of it, so far. That has been about two weeks, too.

It seems the best 'treatment' is to destroy the plant so it does not spread...

I put some wood mulch around the one in particular, actually. I NEVER water from above. I actually hand water everything using a handheld gentle shower arm and directly onto the soil/mulch. There are only two plants that have this issue and they were not next to eachother. I have a very healthy and rapidly growing Krim that was next to the one in the pictures that has no spots, bad leaves, etc... anywhere.

I would think if it was from watering or the rain that it would be on several/many plants. I have a total of 60 tomato plants and two have spots on the fruit and three have/had what appears to be septoria leaf.

Have you seen any "Stink Bugs" around ?

I saw one on a squash plant about three weeks ago, crushed it and have not seen any others. I am in the garden for three or four hours a day looking for things out of sorts and have not encountered any other stink bugs.
